For those locked into the deeper corners of techno and tech-house over the last two decades, Koolt is a name spoken about with serious reverence. Born and raised in Montevideo, he came through Uruguay’s underground during the 90s, absorbing house and techno through pirate radio, imported records and long nights spent inside intimate clubs before developing his own hypnotic, groove-led style behind the decks by the end of the decade.

As Uruguay quietly became one of the world’s most respected underground scenes, Koolt became one of its key architects. In 2013 he co-founded the now-legendary basement club Phonotheque, a space that helped define the “Uruguayan sound” alongside artists like Nicolás Lutz and Z@p. Vinyl-heavy, deeply psychedelic and rooted in patience rather than quick dopamine hits, the club became a global pilgrimage spot for heads properly tapped into the culture.

That same ethos runs through Koolt’s DJing today. Long blends, emotional tension, strange little left turns and grooves that seem to stretch time itself. Nos vemos ahí donde comenzaron varias historias!

“Tínhamos um DJ oculto e não sabíamos.” Foi esta frase, proferida em 1998 por um amigo de Eduardo Cardozo, que deu início a uma nova figura: Koolt. Uma deformação quase metafórica da palavra “oculto”, representando alguém que sempre foi parte essencial da cena, mas que ainda não havia se revelado plenamente. Desde então, Koolt se consolidou como elemento fundamental para o desenvolvimento da cultura de pista underground no Uruguai.

Montevidéu gerou figuras singulares. Em uma época de acesso limitado à música, Koolt garimpava vinis por correio, gravava fitas cassete e construía conhecimento por insistência. Sua relação com o diggin’ alimenta não apenas sua técnica e seus sets — que abrangem os mais diversos gêneros e subgêneros —, mas reforça sua tenacidade em construir uma cena local de valor.

Desde a infância, seus ouvidos foram moldados por Jazz, Rock, música uruguaia, sons experimentais dos anos 60 e 70, coleções de Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze e selos como ECM. Essa formação torna a versatilidade uma consequência natural. Estar em uma pista comandada por ele é como assistir a uma série de suspense: quando menos se espera, vem o plot twist.

Ao lado de dois amigos, Koolt fundou o Phonotheque, club dedicado à cultura eletrônica underground que, meses após a abertura, já se destacava além das fronteiras por sua curadoria e propósito de funcionar como espaço de experimentação e liberdade.

Em uma entrevista, ao ser questionado sobre cenas fora do eixo europeu, sua resposta foi direta: “Essas cenas não estão ‘em desenvolvimento’, elas já estão desenvolvidas, vocês é que ainda não perceberam.” Um diagnóstico certeiro de quem viveu cada etapa de uma cena que cresceu à margem do olhar internacional, mas não da qualidade.

Figuras como Koolt não apenas ocupam um espaço, mas ajudam a defini-lo. Seu trabalho conserva uma linhagem sem se limitar a ela, atuando como farol para novas gerações que entendem a música eletrônica como campo de expressão e resistência.

Montevideo’s exemplary since the origin of the scene, DJ Koolt’s skill has crossed the Atlantic and reached European clubs like FUSE, Concrete, and Goa, a long time ago. As a co-founder of the only underground spot in Uruguay, Eduardo Cardozo continues to leave his mark by opening doors to new talent. Many generations can thank our guest, and we’re eager to see him build a trance-like state on Karmakoma grounds.
