I started out making beats as a young hiphop kid in the early 00’s, mainly because we all tried to freestyle and rap, but we only had existing instrumentals we downloaded from Napster, Audio Galaxy and Kazaa. I remember being in love with the beats and for me it was the most important part of a good tune, though a good rapper can make a not so obvious beat dope of course, it’s all about how that fits together. Anyway, being fortunate that my dad was into computers, I started programming websites and graphic design when I was about 11 years old. I had his old computer and found some pirated music software online, so I ventured into a journey of hi-jacking my parents’ record collection and turntable (sorry for destroying them!), spending most weekends at home with friends, producing and recording hiphop tunes. My mom had mainly Beatles (like) records but also records like Cavern Magica from Andreas Vollenweider for example (she told me she played that all time when she was pregnant with me). My dad, being a technician and interested in electronics (he even made his own organ synth once!) had a few early synthesizer records like Wendy Carlos’ Switched On Bach and Tomita’s Snowflakes Are Dancing for example. He also had some jazz records, going to various jazz clubs in the late 60s and 70s. Once I digested their collection, I started going to recordshops and 2nd hand shops, spending most of my bucks there.
After about 8 years making beats and recording hiphop tunes with friends, I got a bit bored of hiphop and I longed for other adventures, trying to make all sorts of things. A few years ago I re-discovered my love for hiphop music and I’ve jumped back on beat-wagon. Listening to loads of records, always in search of the next sample. It’s like a never-ending quest that repeats over and over. After two years I had quite some beats laying around and figured it would be fun to make a selection of these and glue them together, mixtape style. And what better format for a mixtape is a cassette? The result is Beestrumentals Volume 1. I made a handful of tapes but it’s also on digital platforms from today on.
