Meet Matt, 24, from Leeds. A former competitive swimmer who works in events… and now he’s a lifesaver too!

“I signed up when DKMS came to my uni, they said young men often make the best stem cell donors but are the least likely to join - so I thought it was important,” he explains.

Matt signed up, forgot all about it… then years later got the call 📞
Turns out, he was someone’s only match.

“I was relieved to hear that most people are able to donate through their blood, so it was going to be a relatively easy procedure. I was just so glad I could help.” (9 out of 10 donations look similar to giving blood platelets, btw)

Three mouth swabs ➡️ one donation day ➡️ a second chance at life!

Only 7% of eligible people in the UK are on the register and Matt wants to help change that…

“I’ve been telling as many people as I can, because more people should know how important it is - and how easy it is. It’s especially important for guys my age to sign up. I’d 100% do it again.”

“It only took about 2 and a half hours – even the nurses were surprised, they were like ‘are you done already?’”

But what stayed with him most was the impact afterwards:
“People at work kept coming up to me saying how amazing it was and that I’d inspired them. I told them its actually straightforward to sign up and register.”

And when he learned more about the patient, it really hit home:
“They’re the same age as my mum… they could have a family, kids. That made it real.”

“Overall, it was just a great experience.”

Beth is 31, from Bristol, and has acute myeloid leukaemia. To survive, Beth needs a stem cell transplant.

But because she’s of dual heritage, finding a matching donor is much harder.
“There aren’t enough mixed race donors on the register. I really want to change that - not just for me, but for everyone in my position.”

Beth is hoping her sister is a match for her. If not, Beth will need to rely on the kindness of a stranger to save her life.

“Nothing would mean more to me than getting a stem cell transplant. It would give me the chance to rebuild my life.
“Being diagnosed was the worst day of my life because there was so much to process, and I knew that life wasn’t going to be the same again, at least not for a while. But knowing a stem cell transplant could save me has really helped me cope.

“I am very lucky to have a wonderful family and gorgeous friends, who have given me so much love and support. It’s been very hard for them to watch the difficult journey that I’m about to embark upon.

“They keep me going, keep me smiling, especially my partner, Alice. She has been my absolute rock and I don’t know what I’d do without her.”

A totally normal teenager preparing for his A-Levels, hoping to study Marine Biology at uni.

But he’s also just done something pretty incredible:
✨ He’s the FIRST donor from DKMS UK’s new schools programme
✨ AND he’s DKMS UK’s 3000th stem cell donor !!

Jamie signed up when DKMS visited his school last year:
“I supplied the cheek swabs that same day… I definitely didn’t think I’d ever be contacted.”

Only a few months later, against high odds, he got an email to say he was a match for a patient in need.
“It was just after my 18th birthday. Having been on the register for such a short time, I think everyone was surprised to find out I had been identified as a match - I was very surprised myself.

“I was nervous at first, but the opportunity to help someone else outweighed the nerves.
“DKMS kept in touch through the whole process. You could hear in every phone call how excited they were about finding me, which definitely gave me a boost of encouragement!”

Jamie travelled to Sheffield with his mum to donate his stem cells.
“It was amazing to see the machine working,” says Jamie. “It was a 5-hour process, so I got out my laptop, put on Netflix, sat back and relaxed.

“The staff at the hospital were lovely, making sure I was comfortable and well fed the entire time.”

And it gets even better 🥺
Jamie found out he was the first donor to come from DKMS' school programme - Generation Lifesaver - while he was actually donating - and couldn’t wait to tell his teacher, Mrs Sayers, who brought DKMS into his school in the first place.

“I knew she would be delighted. She has been a big support, especially as the donation was happening during my A-Level exams. It’s been a nice way for me to end my school journey.”
