“Book Proof Vest” •(09.25)• Books can be used for many purposes besides obtaining more knowledge. The vest plays on the very real usage of books in the incarcerated culture as protection from stabbing. Inspired by a scene from the Hbo limited series “The Wire”, where a character Omar is incarcerated and has to prepare to be the aggressor before he himself is a victim. The powerful paradox of using a tool that is usually viewed as protection of ignorance in the metaphysical world, instead used as protection from ignorance in the physical world. This is the main element in the Dually Protected essence being able to find dual meaning in all things. Merging the metaphysical and the physical to work as one. Books have always been used for the fortification of your mental space while they can also be used for your fortification of your physical space.

I asked myself this question when I received my first large amount of money in high school. The answer at that moment was always hypothetical. At a time when acquiring capital was my main priority—or so I thought—any amount over $100,000 would have compromised the moral code I had created in order to acquire that sum. That led me to question my peers: what amount of money would they need to be willing to break the morals they had been raised with and essentially sell their soul? The answers varied, but for the most part, everyone had a price tag.
It did not come as a surprise. We were in high school, and most of us weren’t thinking about revolution or the true nature of capitalism and its impact on global modernization. Naivety, necessity, and ignorance clouded our judgment and made us greedy and gluttonous.
As I got older and gained more knowledge and understanding, rebelling in chaotic ways didn’t hold the same appeal it did in my younger days. Recognizing the need for systemic change is the first step in the ongoing process of undoing the programming ingrained by the current system.
When you become an active participant in society, how can you enact change without allowing the capitalist mindset and its influence to affect your decisions? How do we resist the influence of capitalism on our morals, especially when striving to create change within a system that values profit over principles?
This piece is meant to provoke that question. Whether you have a price at which you’d compromise your principles or believe you would never let money change your moral values, it’s important to critically examine your stance.
