Makan is pleased to announce the launch of A-Ma by Taiwanese American photographer Ethan Lan. Working primarily with photography and printmaking, Lan’s practice reflects on family ties, memory, and the quiet traces of love and loss that shape personal histories.

At its heart, A-Ma is a portrait of Lan’s grandmother, created in the aftermath of his grandfather’s passing after sixty years of marriage. Through tender photographs of daily rituals and ordinary objects, Lan explores grief as it lingers in the details of domestic life. What begins as a family archive unfolds into a meditation on memory, resilience, and enduring love.

With A-Ma, Ethan Lan’s debut artist book, we celebrate both story and craft – where the book itself becomes part of the story. Bound, trimmed, and finished by hand, each of the 60 editions carries traces of touch—mirroring the ways memory, grief, and love linger in the details of everyday life.

A-Ma officially launches on Thursday (9/11) as part of Makan’s participation in the NYABF @printedmatter_artbookfairs. A book singing of A-Ma with the presence of Ethan is held on Saturday (9/12) at 2pm. Visit Makan’s table at m7
