So many of our favorite small businesses across NYC have been forced to close down due to exorbitant rent hikes.

What if we had rent stabilization for commercial spaces like we do for residential apartments?

That’s what Assemblymember Emily Gallagher @emilyassembly and State Senator Julia Salazar @senatorjuliasalazar are looking to make happen with the Small Business Rent Stabilization Act.

These are dark times. People can’t afford healthcare, utilities, and food. Our immigrant neighbors are afraid to leave their homes. We are watching our opportunities shrink as our costs rise and our wages stagnate.

Those of us in positions of power have an obligation to deliver for our people. We must tax the rich so working people can have bread and roses, too.🌹

Our socialists in office were on the move in Albany this past week for the first session of the state assembly rallying for child care and taxing the rich to get it. Last week, @govkathyhochul and @nycmayor announced major expansions to public child care in NYC and statewide—absolute proof that our pressure is working.

But we haven’t won yet. Now we have about three months to make sure legislators actually deliver and fund universal child care for the long term.

Come phonebank and canvass for our Tax the Rich: Fund Child Care campaign and help us secure these programs and to make sure the funding is there for them to continue.

I also passed my balcony solar bill, the SUNNY Act, through the Energy Committee! It’s hard to feel great about Albany right now, given the budget is 45 days late and the governor is holding us hostage to try and force through her policy priorities. But I am proud to fight for my constituents and pass bills that will improve their lives!

I sent a letter to the MTA with @emilyassembly and @cmrestler, urging them to reconsider their current construction plan for the G train this year. The G train is a lifeline for Greenpoint residents and small businesses of Northen Brooklyn. Multiple consecutive weekend shutdowns will isolate the community and cause severe disruptions. They deserve better.

The budget process is wonky. If you’re not a legislative nerd, it can be downright boring. But the Governor’s abuse of the budget process is a huge part of why we’re not getting anything done in Albany. We are in a moment of crisis—immigrants are being kidnapped, half a million New Yorkers are about to lose healthcare, climate crisis is moving faster than expected, the cost of housing is out of control, and people are barely making ends meet. This is not sustainable. I’m fighting to change how we do this process so we can make government work for people. But the first step is making sure you all understand how this process works and where it breaks down.

Incarcerated people regularly transform their lives while inside, especially when they are able to access the programs and incentives to support their rehabilitation. The Earned Time Act recognizes that these shifts are possible, creates a system to incentivize good behavior, and allows people who have transformed their lives to return home to their families. We must pass it this session.
