📌 Exhibition Opening: Saturday 18 April, 16:00–20:00

𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘶𝘴 is a project that comprises an exhibition at de Appel and a series of screenings, performances, and discussions focussing on the lingering and ever-mutating traumas of colonialism that cut across the present. Departing from Ireland – widely regarded as the first historical subject of the British colonial project – the exhibition and events bring together artists who address Ireland or Irish experience alongside ongoing and historical struggles in places such as Palestine and Bangladesh. The works trace how the everyday, insidious operations of colonial rule and violence endure long after formal state independence and international agreements, embedded in bodies and memories, in intimate affections, in social dynamics and dysfunctions.

The project is a collaboration between EVA International – Ireland’s Biennial of Contemporary Art and de Appel. It features a new commission by Dina Mimi and presentations by artists and projects commissioned by EVA International between 2021 and 2025, including 𝘞𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘳 𝘰𝘧 𝘪𝘵 – 𝘋𝘦𝘳𝘳𝘺 𝘍𝘪𝘭𝘮 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘝𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘰 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘬𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘱, a project by Sara Greavu and Ciara Phillips; Ciarán Ó Dochartaigh; Family Connection; Naeem Mohaiemen; Eoghan Ryan; Clíodhna Timoney; Eimear Walshe.

Event partnerships include Filmtheater Kriterion, Eye Filmmuseum and the international workshop 𝘓𝘐𝘉𝘌𝘙𝘈𝘛𝘐𝘖𝘕𝘚: 𝘘𝘶𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘈𝘳𝘵 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘰𝘳𝘺, hosted by the University of Amsterdam. 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘶𝘴 is curated by Ailbhe W. Drohan, Matt Packer, Eszter Szakács.

This screening event presents the Dutch premiere of Naeem Mohaiemen’s 𝘼 𝙈𝙞𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝘾𝙖𝙣 𝙤𝙛 𝙁𝙞𝙡𝙢 (2025), commissioned by EVA International and Kochi-Muziris Biennale, and Zahir Raihan’s iconic documentary 𝙎𝙩𝙤𝙥 𝙂𝙚𝙣𝙤𝙘𝙞𝙙𝙚 (1971), which is also the portal into Mohaiemen’s film. There will be an introduction and a conversation after the screening by Naeem Mohaiemen and Eszter Szakács. This screening is part of the exhibition project 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘶𝘴, co-curated with EVA International, and is co-presented with the Eye Filmmuseum and the international workshop LIBERATIONS: Questions for Art and Theory (1 – 2 June 2026).

Eoghan Ryan will present two films, 𝘊𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘭 𝘑𝘪𝘨𝘴 and 𝘈 𝘚𝘰𝘥 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘦, on Sunday, 31 May 2026 at 19:00 at Filmtheater Kriterion, followed by a conversation with the artist.

Eoghan Ryan’s films depart from specific moments and movements in the history of Ireland: the mutations of contemporary right-wing nationalism (𝘊𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘭 𝘑𝘪𝘨𝘴) and the post-Brexit moment of the early 2020s (𝘈 𝘚𝘰𝘥 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘦). His films often deploy found and borrowed footage, fast-paced editing, and elements of puppetry, horror or propaganda, as a critical gateway into the ways in which conflict is shaped by popular media and remote spectatorship.

𝘈 𝘚𝘰𝘥 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘦 premiered in 2021 at the Open Studios of the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam during Ryan’s residency, and it has been shown various times ever since. The Kriterion screening is the Dutch premier of 𝘊𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘭 𝘑𝘪𝘨𝘴, Ryan’s latest film, which was commissioned in 2025 for the 41st EVA International – Ireland’s Biennial of Contemporary Art.

The screening event and conversation with Eoghan Ryan is presented as part of the exhibition project 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘶𝘴, a collaboration between de Appel and EVA International. This event is kindly supported by Culture Ireland.

A film screening of the Derry Film and Video Workshop 𝘚𝘵𝘰𝘱 𝘚𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘱 𝘚𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 will take place 17 May, 2026, 19:00 at Filmtheater Kriterion, followed by an in conversation with Anne Crilly and Sara Greavu.

𝘚𝘵𝘰𝘱 𝘚𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘱 𝘚𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 documents the intensive use of strip-searching of women political prisoners in the north of Ireland in the early 1980s. Including interviews with ex-prisoners, legal experts, activists, psychologists and the family members of prisoners inside at the time, the film was used as a campaigning tool and toured widely in Ireland and beyond. The issue of strip-searching exposed a fracture within the nascent women’s movement in Ireland, between those who wanted to address this form of state violence against women, and those who feared the political alignment with Irish republicanism that support of the campaign might suggest. Directed by Anne Crilly, it was the first film made by the newly founded collective.

Derry Film and Video Workshop (1984–1990) was a women-led film collective in Derry, in the north of Ireland. In the late 2010s, collecting, preserving, and re-centring the remarkable history and archive of the Derry Film and Video workshop (DFVW) was taken up by curators-artists Sara Greavu and Ciara Phillips, resulting in the exhibition project 𝘞𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘳 𝘰𝘧 𝘪𝘵 – 𝘋𝘦𝘳𝘳𝘺 𝘍𝘪𝘭𝘮 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘝𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘰 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘬𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘱.

An iteration of this project is currently on view at the exhibition 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘶𝘴 at de Appel, developed in collaboration with EVA, which features a chapter foregrounding the campaign against the strip-searching of women political prisoners in the north of Ireland, including rushes made for the DFVW’ film 𝘚𝘵𝘰𝘱 𝘚𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘱 𝘚𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨.

We’re pleased to announce artist writer Roy Claire Potter will extend their work with EVA as Artist Researcher, jointly supported by EVA International and the Institute of Art and Technology at Liverpool John Moores University.

Following co-selection, with curator Iarlaith Ní Fheorais, of 41st EVA Platform Commissions, Roy will undertake a programme of artist research examining the legacy of the commissions. The project combines quantitative analysis and interviews involving the EVA team and Platform artists, and its outcome will be a long-form work of artist writing, scheduled for 2027. The research considers how the 2025 commissions contribute to practice, culture, and the sector, using artist-research approaches centred on situated, embodied perception and compositional method.

The 2027 Platform Commissions coincides with EVA’s 50th anniversary edition, which will critically reflect on key artistic moments and broader political changes that have taken place in Ireland over the past five decades.

The selection panel for the 2027 Platform Commissions will consist of acclaimed artists Bridget O’Gorman, Phillip McCrilly, and Eimear Walshe, alongside members of the EVA team. All three artists were awarded Platform Commissions in previous editions, 2020 - 2025.

As 2025 wraps up, we'd like to extend our thanks to everyone who helped make the 41st EVA International an unforgettable edition.

The EVA Office is now closed for the winter holidays and will reopen in January. We'll also be taking a little break from posting on social media.

ROMANTIC IRELAND, 2024 by Eimear Walshe was presented at Studio Saol as part of the 41st EVA International Guest Programme.

The installation comprised a multi-channel video in an immersive sculpture. Filmed at Common Knowledge, Co Clare in the first week of October 2023, and set on the site of an unfinished earth build, the video stages soapy, dramatic encounters between character archetypes from the 19th–21st centuries. The figures occupy an abstracted ruin, a site under simultaneous construction and demolition. The installation was soundtracked by an opera describing the scene of an eviction, composed by Amanda Feery with a libretto by Walshe.

ROMANTIC IRELAND, 2024 was presented as part of ROMANTIC IRELAND: A National tour in Fragments. The National Tour is supported by the Arts Council / An Chomhairle Ealaíon as part of its commitment to promote the visual arts to Irish audiences. Ireland at Venice is an initiative of Culture Ireland in partnership with the Arts Council / An Chomhairle Ealaíon. ROMANTIC IRELAND was originally curated by Sara Greavu and Project Arts Centre for the Pavilion of Ireland in the Venice Biennale 2024.
