I very rarely use step sequencers. I always prefer writing sequences with my fingertips, just playing until it feels right.

Drawing notes into a grid makes me feel like I’m back at school.

A lot of people message me saying it feels uncomfortable not having a real step sequencer inside the EPs or the MPC Sample. For me, that’s actually a privilege.

It’s way more fun to play every single note of a tune by hand and try to transfer every feeling in real time…

Yesterday I put together a track on the MPC Sample and recorded a video of the process.
Over the last few days, many of you have been asking me: how do I like this sampler, is it worth the attention, and should you buy it?
Short answer: definitely.

First of all, the price point is great. Second, it is a very compact and portable device with an SD card slot, so you can load your personal sample banks and feel right at home. There’s no real space limitation, which gives you the freedom to sample everything that catches your ear.

It took me about half a day to learn the device, and I jumped straight into practice, sketching out four ideas for future tracks. The workflow is unusual, especially if you’ve never used an MPC and are used to the algorithms of a DAW. But I have to say: it’s like a breath of fresh air and a way to step outside of established patterns.

The main focus here is digging for material and then «flipping» it upside down to spark a new idea.
Working on this hardware has further confirmed the principles I’ve been using for years.
- The first is the «commit.» On the MPC, it feels much more natural to immediately fix (record) a sound into audio rather than endlessly tweaking settings «for later.» This speeds up decision-making significantly.
- The second is the nature of the groove. I’ve always known that the groove lives in micro-imperfections, but here, on a physical level, it feels even sharper. When you manually control the attack and start points of a sample, the loop stops being a mathematical cycle and starts to truly breathe.

Spending 4-5 hours a day over the last two days allowed me to adapt quickly. I’ve always been excited by the fact that you can touch music - through faders, buttons, pads, and patch cables. It’s as if you’re pouring your energy into the device, and it interprets it into sound.

These are my first steps into true physical sampling. I’ve mastered the technique since the very beginning, but I’ve always done it using virtual instruments. Now, there’s a sense of that missing link that closes the gap between synths, drum machines, and modulars, finally completing the chain.
