The Ending Explained…

Yaz’s story is an interior one. Her journey is that of a woman who has suppressed trauma and dissociates from those experiences as a coping mechanism. Early on, when her parents divorced, she learned to remain silent, unproblematic, and to deal with her trials alone. It was her belief that being the perfect daughter, would lead them to see the value in staying together. But it didn’t.

It isn’t until PC shows back up in her life that she is reminded of her imperfection: the trauma she experienced in secret that caused great heartbreak. Miscarriage is something that many women endure, yet are left to cope with the loss of life independent of loving attention & emotional support. But Yaz like most, tried her best to continue on like it never happened…and Porter was buried too. Now resurrected, she’s not only embarrassed by her less than stellar career in radio, still at the assistant level…she’s reminded of the experience Porter never knew about. They were best friends, who let their feelings get the best of them and had sex. Not an untypical situation, but Porter was graduating, had a girlfriend…and afterwards Yaz discovers she’s pregnant. She, like always, remains silent, ponders on what to do…and ends up having a miscarriage.

The song, several of you have been asking and I don’t blame you is, “Old Me” by @chrizvaughn was perfect for this moment. I pray he releases it. I listened to it over and over again…even while @aarongillette went through the editing process I kept playing the song for the scene, recognizing how much it related to Yaz’s journey. In the song he says “oh so many things time showed me, standing like a one man army, resurrected no more old me, no more old me.” I told our music supervisor @iamphilippewastaken THAT SONG IS HOW WE END THIS THANG!!!!! Yaz made a bold step to quit…she’s changing. No matter how imperfect the journey may be ahead, she can’t go backwards.

“Should I tell him?” - is her coming to grips with her lack of communication and that maybe a truth-filled conversation with Porter is the beginning of her healing journey.
