I'm happy to introduce Freda Xia @fredaxia
enjoy her art
Intuition shaped my practice before technique ever did. Early training in traditional Chinese painting, line
drawing and printmaking laid a foundation, but what remained central was trust rather than mastery. An
early mentor once told me I did not need to learn how to become an artist because I already was one.
That trust continues to guide the work.
My path into textiles was non-linear. I moved between painting, fashion and fiber rather than leaving one for another. Painting sharpened my sensitivity to surface and image, while fashion introduced physical negotiation and proximity to the body. Fiber became the space where these experiences could merge. A work can hover near the body or expand beyond it, protective and exposed at once.
Process guides the work more than image. I begin with tension rather than a fixed form. Raw silk twists unpredictably. Threads drop. Membranes stretch, sag or partially collapse. Instead of correcting
irregularities, I stay with them. Repair becomes structural. Collapse becomes form. The piece develops as a living system shaped by duration, touch and pressure.
Raw silk remains central. Growing up in China, I raised silkworms as a child. Reeling silk by hand carries both tenderness and resistance. Saturated, full-bodied color feels alive to me. Color is relational and atmospheric. Naturally dyed silk absorbs pigment with depth, allowing tones to shift and enter into dialogue through proximity and light.
Membranes and cellular structures recur throughout the work. Tension-based structures stretch against
translucency. Knots, dropped stitches and visible repairs remain exposed. These forms exist between
containment and release — fragile in appearance yet structurally insistent.
Here, softness is not weakness but tensile strength — a condition where vulnerability and resistance
coexist.

Bio Skin
A translucent membrane grown from biomaterial.
Soft yet quietly resilient.
Still growing.
Ongoing material research: Water and heat resistance.
A skin that remembers the body.

Do you know @fredaxia? Based between Hangzhou and New York, Freda’s practice explores the inner landscape of the body through weaving, natural dye, and mixed materials, transforming silk, straw and found materials into forms that breathe, decay, and grow.
It was a real honour to speak with Freda for Suboart Magazine Nr. 54, where we dove deep into her artistic background and fascination with textiles, projects such as ‘Soft Organs’ and ‘Membrane Species,’ the beauty of wearable art and exploring a great variety of materials, and much more 💜
We do recommend you read this 12-page long interview and get immersed in @fredaxia’s creative universe - copies can be purchased through the @suboartmagazine bio ☀️

Grateful to see this work gently unfold with @suboartmagazine.
Thank you for making space for softness, fragility, and quiet becoming.
I see my practice as interdisciplinary, porous, and open. There are many ways to enter my world.
This time, it is through an in-depth conversation with Suboart that one is invited to step into Freda’s world.
Thank you Nina for such a thoughtful and generous interview.
It has been a joyous journey of reflecting, revisiting, and reconnecting with the sincerity that first drew me to art.

Membrane Species
An installation shaped by biomaterial film, knitting, and woven membranes.
Tracing the moment when boundaries begin to soften,
when the inside drifts outward,
and when repair grows quietly through tension and tenderness.
We’d love to see you at our open studio @parsonstextilesmfa today and share what’s been slowly growing in our world. 🤍🤍🤍

Soft Organs
Materials: Raw silk, corn silk, lotus pods, Pumpkin skin, cockscomb flower, hand-spun local wool, found materials
This body of work grows from within. Spun, knotted, and gathered from what the body remembers.
Silk breathes with tenderness, corn silk and lotus pods hold traces of decay and renewal.
Wool grounds the form in warmth, while found fragments whisper of what’s been shed.
Each fiber becomes a pulse, echoing the soft, interior landscape of the body.

Grows from a moment of agony, intimacy, and quiet resistance.
Through weaving, I trace fragile threads between body and mind, self and other, natural and artificial.
Hand-reeled raw silk dyed with natural colors, spun paper yarn from my paintings, lotus seedpod, pumpkin skin, and corn silk .Each material carries memory, touch, and cultural echoes.
Hi Freda is where I met myself, and where you meet me.

Hi Freda is where I met myself, and where you meet me.

The Instagram Story Viewer is an easy tool that lets you secretly watch and save Instagram stories, videos, photos, or IGTV. With this service, you can download content and enjoy it offline whenever you like. If you find something interesting on Instagram that you’d like to check out later or want to view stories while staying anonymous, our Viewer is perfect for you. Anonstories offers an excellent solution for keeping your identity hidden. Instagram first launched the Stories feature in August 2023, which was quickly adopted by other platforms due to its engaging, time-sensitive format. Stories let users share quick updates, whether photos, videos, or selfies, enhanced with text, emojis, or filters, and are visible for only 24 hours. This limited time frame creates high engagement compared to regular posts. In today’s world, Stories are one of the most popular ways to connect and communicate on social media. However, when you view a Story, the creator can see your name in their viewer list, which may be a privacy concern. What if you wish to browse Stories without being noticed? Here’s where Anonstories becomes useful. It allows you to watch public Instagram content without revealing your identity. Simply enter the username of the profile you’re curious about, and the tool will display their latest Stories. Features of Anonstories Viewer: - Anonymous Browsing: Watch Stories without showing up on the viewer list. - No Account Needed: View public content without signing up for an Instagram account. - Content Download: Save any Stories content directly to your device for offline use. - View Highlights: Access Instagram Highlights, even beyond the 24-hour window. - Repost Monitoring: Track the reposts or engagement levels on Stories for personal profiles. Limitations: - This tool works only with public accounts; private accounts remain inaccessible. Benefits: - Privacy-Friendly: Watch any Instagram content without being noticed. - Simple and Easy: No app installation or registration required. - Exclusive Tools: Download and manage content in ways Instagram doesn’t offer.
