The official reissue of the self-released first Mac Machine single from 1983 is now available in every well-sorted record store or via funkscapes.bandcamp.com.

This little gem brings a boogie funk, early rap slap on the a-side; and a deep, soulful tune on the flipside. Both mark the cornerstone of this band from Kassel, North Hesse, Germany.

With its playfulness, solid skills on the instruments and a brilliant singer, it revealed a first glimpse of what to expect musically of the band that was founded by former US soldiers in 1982.

The re-release comes in a picture sleeve including an insert with liner notes.

Here it is, funkscapes 004, the official 12" reissue of the somewhat holy grail of Austrian Funk!

What A Funky Night remastered from the original analogue master tapes and pressed onto wax in its full length as a super sound single with the original artwork and extensive liner notes.

It's been 40 years that @harristojka composed this infectious boogie funk groove with raps by his cousin Robi. Not fitting the Zeitgeist back then it became a special treat for funk lovers worldwide over the years.

On the flipside you got a previously unreleased version of Marihuana that surfaced during the reissue process. This earlier version was recorded during the 'Camera' LP sessions.

@trishesvie met up with Harri Stojka for an interview to get to know more about the beginnings of his musical life. You can read about his passion for music and the fertile Viennese music scene of the 70s in the liner notes provided on this record.

Since 'Butterfly Dance' was originally released on a compilation back then, there was a need for a new artwork for its single release.

So I got in contact with @holger_kurt_jaeger_ whose oil paintings are standing out to me. They are very finely executed, often some warm, natural tones for the background in combination with vibrant colors of the motifs. And his sujets frequently have a humorous side to it. Clever and classy, never trashy.

Holger Kurt Jäger liked the idea of picking up on the original and painted a 30×30 cm canvas with oil and airbrush colors. The outcome is a great take and matches the sound perfectly.

At the end of April I visited him again in his exciting studio, a former car repair shop. See the painter in front of his atelier Werkstatt Werkstatt.

Am Samstag, den 16. Mai kehrt der Düsseldorfer Musiker Stefan Schwander, alias Harmonious Thelonious, mit seinem neuen Album „Grumpy Pieces“ im Gepäck zurück in die Schleuse Zwei.

Die Platte wirkt wie eine Verdichtung früherer Ideen: ineinandergreifende Melodien, hypnotische Muster, ein anhaltender Fokus auf Rhythmus und Textur, gepaart mit einem Sound, der rauer, trockener und unmittelbarer ist als zuvor. Musikalisch schöpft „Grumpy Pieces“ aus vertrautem Terrain innerhalb des Harmonious-Thelonious-Universums: Panafrikanische und nahöstliche Rhythmuskonzepte, repetitive minimale Strukturen, reduzierte Elektronik und Noise, die als strukturelle Kraft eingesetzt werden.
Doch alles hier wirkt weniger festgefügt, instabiler, manchmal kurz davor, auseinanderzufallen.
Melodien reiben sich an rauen Bassfundamenten; trockene Snare-Schläge schneiden scharf durch den Mix. Der Groove bleibt zentral, trägt nun aber eine nervöse, gebrochene Qualität – spürbar unruhiger, als man es von einem seit fast achtzehn Jahren aktiven Projekt erwarten würde.

Der Titel „Grumpy Pieces“ ist mehr als nur eine ironische Randbemerkung. Das Album spiegelt eine Gegenwart wider, die von politischen und sozialen Spannungen geprägt ist. Wut, Unsicherheit und ein gedämpftes Gefühl der Verzweiflung ziehen sich durch die Tracks, ohne dass die Musik jemals wörtlich wird oder in offene Kommentare abgleitet. Stattdessen wirkt sie durch Reibung: zwischen Dancefloor-Dynamik und Störung, Unmittelbarkeit und Widerstand.

Grumpy Pieces ist kein Bruch, sondern eine Schärfung. Ein Album, das den unverwechselbaren Sound von Harmonious Thelonious weiter verdichtet und aufraut und einen unbehaglichen, doch körperlichen Soundtrack zum aktuellen gesellschaftlichen Klima bietet. Tanzmusik mit Biss.

The pre-order for funkscapes 013 has already started. The single reissue of Dieter Bührig's 'Butterfly Dance', a German under-the-radar disco dancefloor stomper, will be accompanied with a little DJ tour.

Korkut Elbay, who created a spaced out balearic dub rework for the flipside, and myself will spin some records together during the next three months.

We kick off at @schleuse_zwei this saturday with the infamous @holger_kurt_jaeger_ , who painted the artwork for this release, as special guest DJ. A rare occasion to catch this extraordinary artist at the wheels of steel!

Furthermore we stop by at Cologne's funkiest basement, the @groove_attack_recordstore .

We are also looking forward to soundtrack the @openground.club lobby and shake the dancefloor at @king_georg_clgn in April.

In June we will end our little excursion at the memorable @bar_elektra .
