First introduced in its original tube form in 1964, the Neumann SM 69 FET is a legendary solid-state, large-diaphragm stereo condenser microphone designed for coincident stereo techniques (X-Y, M-S, Blumlein). Featuring two independently controlled K67/K870 capsules in a single housing, it provides high-precision audio for classical, jazz, and studio overheads, often described as a transistor-based, dual-U87.

There are a few differences between the Neumann SM69 (FET) and the USM69i, most notably that the USM69i is a modern solid-state update that integrates the pattern control switches onto the microphone body, whereas the earlier SM69 FET requires an external selector/supply. While both share the same dual-capsule design, the original SM69 FET features discrete circuitry, 9 polar patterns, and usually a little more “character” in the highs (simply due to useage), whilst the USM69i provides higher headroom and lower noise thanks to its updated circuitry.

Often dubbed (somewhat dramatically) the “U87 killer”, the CU-41 is an incredibly versatile microphone that features a dual-capsule design, with each capsule tailored to a specific frequency range (highs and mid/lows). The two signals are then blended into a single mono output, resulting in a highly detailed and exceptionally natural response that excels on both male and female vocals, piano (it’s one of our favourites for upright) and acoustic string instruments in particular.

We’ve had Trinnov’s D-MON room correction running in our demo room for some time now, so we’re very familiar with what the system can do. That said, it’s no secret that Trinnov’s flagship systems can feel a bit daunting, for newbies and pros alike.

The Nova changes that. It packs Trinnov’s powerful room and monitor optimisation into a compact 1U unit and adds intuitive (idiot-proof, really) control via new Windows, Mac, and iOS apps. Smaller, more approachable, and more affordable than the ST2 Pro and D-MON, it’s still a serious investment - but one that delivers outstanding results, even in a professionally treated room like ours.

Had the great pleasure of visiting @winchesteraudiobarn today for a demonstration of their state-of-the-art studio facility. A stunning space filled with some iconic pieces, not least of all a Wurlitzer that once belonged to the Doors (complete with cigarette burn from Amy Winehouse, who used it extensively), and the original Sun Studios Fairchild 670 (Elvis, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, B.B.
