Paint it Black at 60!

Today marks the 60th anniversary of the US release of The Rolling Stones’ single, Paint it Black.

1966 was the year I shot the At Home series with The Rolling Stones. Artist Christian Furr and I created a piece to celebrate Paint it Black based on two shots of Mick at home.

The piece is part of my current retrospective exhibition, Gered Mankowitz: Photographs at Iconic Images Gallery Piccadilly and is featured in my new book of the same title.

Gered Mankowitz is here to tell us more about one if his iconic images which is currently being exhibited in his retrospective show at Iconic Images Gallery Piccadilly, Gered Mankowitz: Photographs - this striking image of The Yardbirds captured outside Gered’s studio.

The Yardbirds in London, 1966 — Limited Edition Print

English rock band The Yardbirds are captured outside Mankowitz’s Ormond Yard Studio during a photo session in London in 1966.The band kickstarted the careers of three of rock’s most famous guitarists, Eric Clapton, who left the band in 1965, his replacement Jimmy Page, and Jeff Beck, the latter two of which are pictured here. By a stroke of luck, this portrait also features the symbol of the British establishment striding past wearing his bowler hat, snapped between the legs of the singer Keith Relf.

*Stoned Sundays*

When I was shooting with Keith as part of the “At Home” series in the summer of 1966 at his then new home of Redlands in West Sussex, the builders were very much in evidence refurbishing the place. We thought it was funny to drag this old loo onto the lawn for the classic Keith on the throne shot!

All that’s missing is the sea!

Gered Mankowitz is here to tell us more about one if his iconic images which is currently being exhibited in his retrospective show at Iconic Images Gallery Piccadilly, Gered Mankowitz: Photographs.

This fabulous image of Wham! featured on the cover of the August 1983 edition of ‘Smash Hits’ magazine.

“Shot in my Hampstead studio for the cover and pull-out poster of the August issue of Smash Hits magazine, I made a beach scene to echo the bands’ recent Club Tropicana hit which was in the charts at the time. I designed the shot so that fans could stick it on their walls either way up according to which of Andrew or George was their favourite!” - Gered Mankowitz

Gered Mankowitz: Photographs is on show at Iconic Images Gallery Piccadilly until May 16.

*Stoned Sundays*

Gered Mankowitz is here with Gallery Director, Javier, to tell the story behind one of his most iconic images. The classic piece is currently being exhibited at Iconic Images Gallery Piccadilly as part of his retrospective show, Gered Mankowitz: Photographs.

The image is an outtake from the famous cover session for The Rolling Stones’ eclectic 1967 album, Between the Buttons.

“I took the image one cold, bright November morning, in 1966 on London’s Primrose Hill after an all-night recording session with the band. The Stones were bleary-eyed and freezing, huddled in their coats. I had devised a filter made from glass and black card, smeared it with Vaseline and fixed it to the 50mm lens of my Hasselblad 500c camera. The result was a soft-edged, dreamlike image of the band that perfectly complemented the album’s psychedelic sound.⁣”

Saddened by the news that Dave Mason has died much too young at only 79.

In the sessions with Traffic that we did, his importance to the composition was always strong in spite of taking a low-profile approach to photography…RIP

Spin Me Round

For Record Store Day ‘26, Iconic Images Gallery Piccadilly celebrated the art of the record sleeve with a fantastic and fascinating panel discussion about the creation, wonder and importance of great album art.

Celebrated photographer Gered Mankowitz discussed working on albums for Kate Bush, Rolling Stones and his first, jazz legend Annie Ross.

Writer Paul Gorman moderated the discusssion, connecting Gered’s career with the other panellists.
Musicians David Grant and Nick Heyward couldn’t believe their luck when they learned Gered said yes when asked to take the photos for their records. “No matter what happens with our career, we’d always have that album cover” David remembered.

Bill Smith, former Art Director of Polydor, spoke about how getting the right album cover meant sometimes coping with a crisis. “You couldn’t go to the record company and say oh the band didn’t feel like it today. You had to deliver a result.”

And everyone agreed, Gered would get the job done.

David summed up beautifully why some covers work and why some don’t:

“It is not what you look at, it is what you see.”

Thank you to everyone who attended and special gratitude to David Grant, Nick Heyward, Bill Smith, Paul Gorman and Gered Mankowitz for making a beautiful Saturday afternoon even brighter.

Viva Record Store Day!

Gered’s exhibition “Photographs” is on view at the Iconic Images Gallery until May 16.

View Instagram Stories in Secret

The Instagram Story Viewer is an easy tool that lets you secretly watch and save Instagram stories, videos, photos, or IGTV. With this service, you can download content and enjoy it offline whenever you like. If you find something interesting on Instagram that you’d like to check out later or want to view stories while staying anonymous, our Viewer is perfect for you. Anonstories offers an excellent solution for keeping your identity hidden. Instagram first launched the Stories feature in August 2023, which was quickly adopted by other platforms due to its engaging, time-sensitive format. Stories let users share quick updates, whether photos, videos, or selfies, enhanced with text, emojis, or filters, and are visible for only 24 hours. This limited time frame creates high engagement compared to regular posts. In today’s world, Stories are one of the most popular ways to connect and communicate on social media. However, when you view a Story, the creator can see your name in their viewer list, which may be a privacy concern. What if you wish to browse Stories without being noticed? Here’s where Anonstories becomes useful. It allows you to watch public Instagram content without revealing your identity. Simply enter the username of the profile you’re curious about, and the tool will display their latest Stories. Features of Anonstories Viewer: - Anonymous Browsing: Watch Stories without showing up on the viewer list. - No Account Needed: View public content without signing up for an Instagram account. - Content Download: Save any Stories content directly to your device for offline use. - View Highlights: Access Instagram Highlights, even beyond the 24-hour window. - Repost Monitoring: Track the reposts or engagement levels on Stories for personal profiles. Limitations: - This tool works only with public accounts; private accounts remain inaccessible. Benefits: - Privacy-Friendly: Watch any Instagram content without being noticed. - Simple and Easy: No app installation or registration required. - Exclusive Tools: Download and manage content in ways Instagram doesn’t offer.
