No Goldcast today for good reason dear friends. It is out of respect for the 25th anniversary of the release of an album that has influenced my life since the day it was injected into a much needing world. I feel beyond fortunate and grateful to have had some of my greatest teachers in life enter my awareness from my earliest teenage years. I have always felt that MUSIC, unlike most vehicles toward seeking truth, never assumed to ANSWER our grandest or most basic questions we carry about life. Rather, MUSIC played a more nourishing part, served an even more important role, and with such humility, actually achieved a more challenging task than answering a question from an elevated “knowing”, it actually invited you into another human’s personal experience in asking the same exact questions, same struggles, same battles, same views and assumptions regarding similar unknowns. And as a listener, not feeling like I was being TOLD what things WERE, what the answer to my question IS, and what it all MEANT…
Music was another human(s) reaching out, shouting into the aether, of what was pondered, questioned, contemplated, and felt deep down, without hubris, expressions of hopeful love, and deep hatred, joys & sadnesses, celebrations of success, and the ails of failure. THE HUMAN EXPERIENCE. What a young man perhaps feeling overwhelmed in those innocent days, asking if he was maybe broken, different. OR ALONE, was given the ultimate gift of feeling not so alone in how experiencing life. A place where the absolutes and unquestionable aspects of reality were forced into a students mind, given in a cold and cocky “take our word for it” qualifier. Music was a non-physical forum for ideas to be expressed and explored freely in a cathardic cry as if to whisper underneath the loudest noises “does anybody feel the way I do?”.
Such gifts did not go unnoticed by me. And today I hold in the highest of regards, an album which has grown to challenge me with new degrees of relevence every few years, a new dimension discovered with age, or experiences had. Almost biblical in it’s unifying themes, subject matter, and overlapping of the human experience. Lateralus… happy 25th 🙏🏼
