This new band, co-founded by Mats Gustafsson and Goran Kajfeš, brings together Swedish musicians from different generations who share a desire to continue the multicultural musical vision pioneered decades ago by trumpeter Don Cherry. The quintet skillfully combines free and spiritual jazz, traditional (especially African) music, and elements of experimental music and electronics.

Swedish trumpeter Goran Kajfeš and his Subtropic Arkestra surprise music fans with a Bandcamp only EP featuring Kurdish-Swedish vocalist Avin Omer. To be released on 10" vinyl and digitally only on Bandcamp, the EP marks a first in a series of three EPs featuring different vocalists to be released in 2026 by We Jazz Records.
The Subtropic Arkestra, already a fan favourite bringing together various Swedish jazz and psychedelic music scene heavy hitters, fires on all cylinders here, performing originals and re-contextualizing traditionally-influenced material with Omer. The set of three tracks features the original compositions "Desmala Min" and "Monsoon", latter with lyrics penned by the Iraqi Kurdish poet, Şêrko Bêkes (1940-2013). Additionally, the band & Omer tackle the re-arranged traditional composition "Sulemani" to epic effect. Avin Omer shines all the way through as the brilliant soloist of this set, leaving the listener to long for more. Then again, you can always hit "play" again.
