It always starts long before the paint touches the steel. The preparation becomes part of the ritual — laying out the art supplies, checking caps, filling the bag, and shaking the cans until the sound becomes familiar. Every detail matters. Every movement has purpose. At first there’s excitement, but as the time gets closer, the anticipation slowly turns into nerves.

Your mind races while your body tries to stay calm. You tell yourself to focus, to breathe, to stay sharp. Still, your mouth turns dry like the Sahara Desert, and the pressure sits heavy in your chest. Before entering the yard comes the nervous piss, the final moment where reality hits and you realize there’s no turning back now.

Then the mission begins.

I’ve just taken all the @greatbates sketches out of my bunker and packed them up, ready to return them next weekend at @unlockfair .

Even while packing these historic pieces, I got goosebumps all over again.

Exactly one year ago, at the beginning of May, BATES handed this stack over to me during @urban_impressions_festival in Ansbach/Germany. Also back then, I felt truly honoured by the trust he placed in me. Receiving something important like this is far from being a given.

And honestly, I’m also a bit relieved to give everything back now — not having to worry about their safety anymore. Fire, water, boys in blue … you never know what can happen.

While packing, I found myself reflecting on the whole project. What originally started as a much smaller book idea grew into something far bigger than expected. I’m really happy with how everything turned out and how the whole journey unfolded.

And BATES is happy too — which really means a lot to me.
