Currently on view: Dan Perjovschi ‘’Let’s work on what we have’’. The exhibition brings together early works from the 1980s and 1990s alongside a group of pieces that have not been shown before. Placed together, the works trace a practice built on consistency and daily attention — drawings made across four decades in very different circumstances. What looks spontaneous is in fact the result of an extensive working process, moving through notebooks and hundreds of drawings.

Drawing Machine is based on the joint application of rotary motion and magnetism. As an interaction of the two forces a “drawing” is created: the track of movement on the surface of a glass plate covered in magnetic powder.

A record player is placed underneath the glass plate, with a construction of rods placed on its turntable, which is able to generate highly complex movements. A magnet is fixed at the extreme point of the outermost rod. As the record player starts to rotate, owing to centrifugal force, the rods become radially arranged, so that the moving magnet is placed on a circular path. I also placed a “counter-magnet” in the system, which diverts the moving magnet from this path, pushing it back again inside the circle. For a while, the magnet moves in a random way, then it returns to its circular orbit, just to be pushed back yet again, and so forth.

The whole process is unpredictable for the viewer, who can see an endlessly changing, coincidental, calligraphic, and, sometimes, geometric drawing in the magnetic powder; a drawing that continuously redraws itself.

🌀 Opening the series “Echoes and Distortions: Romanian Experimental Film and Video Art”, this screening + talk introduces audiences to a powerful and historically underrepresented field. Centered on Ion Grigorescu, the program traces a body of work shaped under the constraints of the communist regime and rarely seen internationally before 1989.

🎥 Through film, performance, and photography, Grigorescu turns the camera into both witness and counterpart—using his own body to explore tension, vulnerability, and subtle resistance. The evening features a selection of key works alongside reflections on perception, mediation, and representation under authoritarianism.

🎤 The program includes a keynote by MoMA curator Roxana Marcoci, a screening of eight essential films selected by Andreiana Mihail, and a panel discussion with Roxana Marcoci, Amy Bryzgel, and Lukas Brasiskis, with Andreiana Mihail joining online. The night concludes with “Boxing with Myself”, an intimate documentary portrait of the artist.

🎥 Widely regarded as one of the most important Romanian artists of the postwar period, Ion Grigorescu has spent decades working across photography, film, performance, and painting to probe the fraught intersections of body, sexuality, and politics. Emerging under Romania’s communist regime, his practice developed in relative isolation, turning inward while subtly confronting systems of control, surveillance, and authority.

📹 Using his own body as both subject and medium, Grigorescu’s work moves between the intimate and the political, staging solitary, ritualized actions that blur the line between art and lived experience. From the 1970s onward, his filmed performances became a powerful site of reflection, at once vulnerable, confrontational, and quietly resistant. Today, his art continues to resonate internationally, with exhibitions at institutions including MoMA and the Venice Biennale.

🎥 This special evening unfolds as a journey through Grigorescu’s singular artistic universe, where each film reveals a different facet of his inquiry into body, perception, and lived reality. From the quiet rhythms of everyday life in “Balta Albă”, his works shift fluidly between observation and metaphor. In “Boxing” and “Male/Female”, the body becomes a site of tension, ambiguity, and confrontation, while “Dialogue with President Ceaușescu” stages an uncanny imagined exchange that probes the limits of speech under authoritarian power. With “Family”, intimacy and movement unfold slowly, contrasting with the structural experimentation and rupture of “Start”. The program closes with “Sleep”, where stillness and subtle motion evoke a deeply introspective state. The selection was made by Andreiana Mihail who has worked closely with Ion Grigorescu over the last 17 years.

For our exhibition “Hundred Rising Suns” as part of Constellations, we are pleased to present Attila Csörgő, represented by Gregor Podnar Gallery.

Attila Csörgő is a Hungarian artist born in 1965 in Budapest. In 1994 he graduated from the Faculty of Painting and Faculty of Intermedia at the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest. He also studied at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam. He creates installations which combine photography, sculpture and drawing, inspired by topics from the area of mathematics and physics. In his continuing investigation of the mechanisms of perception, he analyses the relationships between plane, time and space, making use of the attainments of such disciplines as kinetics, optics and geometry. The results of his experiments are often surprising, amusing and even poetic. He participated in numerous individual and collective exhibitions, e.g. VIVA ARTE VIVA, 57th Venice Biennial (2017), dOCUMENTA (13) in Kassel (2012), Revolution — Forms that Turn, 16th Biennial of Sydney (2008) and Poetic Justice, 8th Istanbul Biennial (2003). Laureate of the Nam June Paik Award (2008). His works are exhibited in many international collections, e.g. at Centre Pompidou, MUDAM in Luxemburg, Hamburger Kunsthalle and Ludwig Múzeum in Budapest. He lives and works in Warsaw.

🌀 Part of the new series “Echoes & Distortions: Romanian Experimental Film & Video Art”, organized by the Romanian Cultural Institute in partnership with e-flux Screening Room, this screening+talk event introduces American audiences to a vital yet historically underrepresented field: Romanian experimental film & video art. The series begins with a focus on Ion Grigorescu, a central figure of the Romanian neo-avantgarde, whose work emerged under the constraints of the communist regime & remained largely unseen until after 1989.

🎥 Working in relative isolation, Grigorescu developed a singular practice across film, performance, and photography, in which the camera becomes both witness and interlocutor. His works—often staged in the privacy of his studio or in peripheral landscapes—use the artist’s own body as primary material, probing states of tension, vulnerability, and self-confrontation while encoding subtle forms of political dissent. Across these moving image works, tightly constructed actions give way to reflections on perception, doubling, and mediation, culminating in staged dialogues that test the limits of representation under authoritarianism.

🎤 The evening opens with a keynote address by MoMA curator Roxana Marcoci, titled “Ion Grigorescu — Cinema at the Limits of the Self”, followed by a screening of eight key works of the artist, selected by Andreiana Mihail who has worked closely with Ion Grigorescu over the last 17 years.
