Finally sharing this after a year of work and so many amazing collaborators, we concepted it collectively as a studio and then handed it to one of our in house directors @kaki.wong.kaki who absolutely smashed it. We managed to shoot the whole piece in two days on location at the college with a small but incredible team and we’re really proud of the results. ⁠

TOPS on TOUR with @tgirlsonfilm !!

We’re going round all the towns and that with my debut feature, “TOPS” and a short programmer by @tgirlsonfilm.

After each legendarily local screening, I will be joined by Jaye Hudson of @tgirlsonfilm to discuss the top life of a transgender in film!

TOPS is a fun pastiche of chaotic, brash, self-deprecating and clueless 1990s/2000s British reality TV, Casting themselves as an invasive TV presenter, Ames goes on a satirical odyssey through the lives and homes of four unique individuals, exploring the crucial question that defines the transmasc experience: “What TOP did you want to wear after TOP surgery?”.

TOPS is a Grey Moth production

Ames Pennington (they/he) is a writer, director and artist. They make films, performances and
collaborative projects about class, sexuality and gender. Their independent debut feature, TOPS, is a genre-busting documentary inspired by chaotic 90s British TV. At BFI FLARE Festival 2024 it was named in both Evening Standard and AnOther Mag’s Top 10 picks of the festival, winning the Audience Award at Bradford Queer Film Festival and long listed for a BIFA Maverick Award 2024.

With huge success in the UK festival circuit TOPS also went on to screen internationally: including GAZE International LGBTQIA+ Film Festival, Dublin; Kashish Pride Film Festival, Mumbai; NEW-FEST LGBTQIA+ Film Festival, New York; and Crossings, Norway.

Jaye Hudson (she/her) is a film programmer, trans historian, and actor, best known for her work under the platform TGirlsonFilm, which has been featured in Little White Lies, The Face, and Autostraddle. She is currently a programmer at BFI Flare: London LGBTQIA+ Film Festival, and has previously worked with a range of UK festivals including Flatpack Festival, London Short Film Festival, Leeds Queer Film Festival, Otherfield Film Festival, and SQIFF.

A midwinter ghost story ❄️ @shycharles ‘Wuthering Heights’ themed video for ‘2 Become 1’ is a year old. Staring @shon.faye as Cathy and @otamere as Heathcliff, it re-imagines the Spice Girls’ lyrics as a call from beyond the grave.
