2 weeks of ✨🌾 In the Tall Grass ✨🌾

This week I’m celebrating the first radio play of In the Tall Grass, the first single off the album. This song connects me with the heart of what drew me to sing and make music. This song came out of a time when my friends and I would learn folks songs just for the joy of it, just so it could be a part of our life. It was a way of being together. We would work diligently to lock in the harmonies. I know many of you know what I mean. It’s still something I love to do, but it can be hard to hold onto this innocence and simplicity when you begin to do this professionally. This way of singing for singing’s sake, of music-making being a part of our lives, is one of the things I want to nurture collectively, and it is in all of our roots of music. We must leave perfectionism behind for the real. Let’s do more of this together please!

This song is also precious to me for the way it emerged out of friendship and love. With this song I honor my long friendship with Hale May, an extraordinary being who has always supported me in giving my gifts to the world. We’ve been friends through ups and downs of many different eras of our lives. We’ve traveled the world singing together. We have this ability to uplift each others’ gifts and shine a mirror back towards the other that says “I see you, I believe in you, and I want the world to experience your splendor too!”

Something Hale May, our collaborator Nik Kemmer, and so many friends share, is this generosity of spirit, a big-heartedness, a way of supporting & uplifting each other. This is such a balm to the overculture’s indoctrination of scarcity & competitiveness, which often motivates our actions and ways of being on subconscious levels.

This first single off my upcoming album Midnight Hour goes back to the roots of my relationship with music — folk songs in harmony, stripped down, simple, bare. In The Tall Grass is one of the first songs I ever wrote, co-written back in 2012 with my dear friend Hale May, a gorgeous singer and luminous being. This song also goes back to the roots of recorded music— just one microphone in a room, just one live take with all its imperfections, quirks and humbleness.
It’s a brew of collective expression, a meeting of a time and a place and bodies in process, something that can’t really be manipulated through editing and postproduction. You got what you got.
Hale, Nik & I were all hanging out one evening in LA and remembered this old song, we worked it out, and decided to record it just for the hell of it. Later on, during the making of this album, cellist Anne Bourne, chose this as one of the songs she wanted to accompany, so you can also hear her incredible playing on here.
The song was written in a different era of my life, back when I wanted so badly to be singing and creating music. I wanted it so badly and I felt so unworthy, I could hardly admit it to myself or any one else. When I shyly told Hale that I wanted to write songs, she was so encouraging. We took a picnic blanket out to the orchard one late summer afternoon and this song began.
