Memorial Day was first widely observed on May 30, 1868, to honor the sacrifices of soldiers in the Civil War. At Arlington National Cemetery looking over Washington, D.C., thousands of people helped lay flowers at the graves of more than 15,000 soldiers.

James Garfield, a former major general in the war then serving as a Congressman, addressed the crowd amid the graves. "I know of nothing more appropriate on this occasion than to inquire what brought these men here; what high motive led them to condense life into an hour, and to crown that hour by joyfully welcoming death?"

His answer: The Nation summoned them to arms because "two centuries of freedom had made its people unfit for despotism."

Another 150 years on, America and its ideals of liberty are still worth fighting for. Today, we thank those who sacrificed everything so that we can continue working toward a more perfect union.

I was thrilled to attend a preview screening this week of @suffsmusical, which will debut on PBS’s Great Performances tonight at 9pm ET.

The paperback edition of “Something Lost, Something Gained” is out today. Like the Joni Mitchell song that inspired its title, this book is about looking back on a full life with fresh eyes.

It’s been a chance to share some wisdom picked up along the road and offer ways to think about our collective future.
