“Lastly, on May 15 at the Hotel Canopy, the organizers will present the second edition of “The African and Diasporic Audience Development Think Tank.” Initiated by Yetu (Un)limited in 2025, the traveling think tank combines market research with the co-creation of audience design methodologies for African cinema.

Its pilot edition, which was held in Salvador, Brazil, in partnership with the Mostra de Cinemas Africanos, generated case studies, qualitative audience design frameworks and the first edition of an ongoing publication. The Cannes session, presented with the support of IEFTF, will showcase the Brazil pilot findings and set the strategic framework for a dedicated support platform to grow revenue-generating audiences for African cinema globally.”

The TFL Meeting Event – a co-production market that for 18 years has made Turin a crossroads for audiovisual industry professionals – marks the conclusion of a year-long advanced training programme organised by TorinoFilmLab – Museo Nazionale del Cinema and made possible thanks to 41 international partners.

Throughout 2025, 113 writers, directors and producers worked on the development of 48 projects – 39 feature films and 9 TV series – supported by TFL tutors, and in recent days they presented their ideas in Turin before an audience of industry professionals.

IEFTA selected Zahraa Ghandour for the IEFTA Global Film Expression Initiative Awards at the 2021 El Gouna Film Festival, CineGouna springboard platform and have since been mentoring and supporting Zahraa.

Zahraa Ghandour’s debut chronicles the unexplained disappearances of Iraqi women. Ever since the fateful day her 10-year-old friend and neighbour Nour went missing, Ghandour has been looking for answers. Focusing on the concept of “flana,” an Iraqi term for forgotten or anonymous women, Ghandour links past and present, connecting with her elders and peers while attempting to find her childhood playmate in the context of disappearances that still happen on a weekly basis.

Expanded access: Open to Close Up alumni & filmmakers across Southwest Asia & North Africa (SWANA)!

This exclusive program is designed for filmmakers who have reached the rough-cut stage with their projects. As Close Up continues to foster creative documentary storytelling across Southwest Asia and North Africa, this program aims to help participating filmmakers refine and complete their films in a way that truly honors their creative vision and storytelling goals.

* 3 intensive workshops with top industry professionals
* Complete coverage of tuition fees
* Round-trip airfare to workshop locations

Dear IEFTA Friends & Supporters,

Nineteen years ago, IEFTA was created with a clear mandate:

To engage in the art of cinema, and to support those striving to tell their stories without the means to do so.

We did that. Across borders, cultures, and crises, we stood alongside filmmakers whose work deserved the world’s attention. From refugee camps to festival red carpets, from first drafts to international premieres, we made room for stories that would otherwise go unheard.

We partnered with institutions, mentored new talent, and built real infrastructure for cinematic voices in the Global South and across diaspora communities. This was powered by a lean team of consultants and mentors whose belief in the work—and in storytellers—shaped everything we built.

Now, IEFTA is closing its doors. Not because the work is finished—but because the structure must shift.

Cinema is changing. Distribution is broken. Budgets are collapsing. AI is rewriting the rules of creation. And still—too often—the voices most worth hearing remain the least supported. Migrants, stateless people, displaced communities: they are not invisible. We just choose not to look.

That must end.

This is not a retreat. This is a reset.

We pause to rethink. To retool. To reimagine what the next version of this work looks like—one that’s faster, louder, and unapologetically aligned with where storytelling needs to go.

The work ahead is bigger than any single organization. But you’ve proven that commitment, collaboration, and courage still matter. So keep pushing. Keep building. Keep backing stories that challenge the silence.
