🎶 𝘔𝘦𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘱𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘴 meets 𝘕𝘰𝘴𝘧𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘶: in Garin Nugroho’s SETAN JAWA (2017), the visual language of German Expressionism is blended with Javanese shadow theatre and mysticism. Filmed in stark black-and-white, this Indonesian take on 𝘍𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘵 is not a retro experiment but a wonderful re-interpretation of silent cinema as a contemporary art form.

This is a unique opportunity to experience this internationally presented work in Antwerp for the first time. For this film concert, leading Javanese singer and composer Peni Candra Rini is joined by musician Indrė Jurgelevičiūtė and by multi-instrumentalist and Prof. Dr. Andy McGraw. Reborn through voice, percussion, and sound, Rini’s new score revitalises gamelan traditions.

In the film, poor mat weaver Setio makes a pact with dark forces to gain wealth so he can marry Asih, a woman from a higher class. But power comes at a price. When his ambition spirals out of control, love becomes a sacrifice…

A co-production of Het Bos and De Cinema. With thanks to the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Brussels.

⤷ Tickets are now available via decinema.be!

// WED 20 MAY Jessika Kenney & Indré Jurgelevičiūtė + dudal & de Roover //

Double bill of two captivating duos, transforming tradition into transfixing soundscapes 🌷

Like the late expansive bloom of tulips, Indrė and Jessika vocalize the irruption of petals in reconfigurations of ancient chant through fragments of oral and scholarly textual and musical traditions. The result is a transfixing immersion in another nameless world.

Pieter Dudal and Adriaan de Roover craft ritualistic tape-loop soundscapes where every gesture shapes the evolving music.

Imagine an Indonesian Faust, draped in the deep shadows of German Expressionism. SETAN JAWA by Garin Nugroho is no dusty retro-experiment, but a haunting black-and-white ritual where dark magic and modern cinema collide.

The story follows Setio, a poor mat-weaver who strikes a forbidden pact to marry the woman of his dreams. But power comes with a price, and as his ambition spirals, love becomes a sacrifice. The film is carried by the physical, almost hypnotic presence of Asmara Abigail, pulling you into a whirlwind of Javanese mysticism and tragedy.

This is more than just a screening: the film is “reborn” live through the voice, breath, and percussion of phenomenal Javanese composer Peni Candra Rini, accompanied by Indrė Jurgeleviciūtė and Prof. Dr. Andy McGraw (Chair, Music Department, University of Richmond) as multi-instrumentalist. Having brought their spellbinding gamelan sounds to Carnegie Hall and the Smithsonian, they now arrive in Antwerp to breathe life into the shadows.

A co-production of Het Bos & De Cinema.

B-Classic gave guitarist and sound artist Bert Cools carte blanche for a new musical creation with Kjartan Sveinsson, Indrė Jurgelevičiūtė & Gyða Valtýsdóttir.

Bert Cools, known from Merope, Hoera, and Book of Air, continually evokes dreamlike worlds situated between folk, jazz, and electronic music. His subtle yet layered playing has made him a sought-after musician for artists such as Sam Amidon, Trixie Whitley, and Efterklang.

Kjartan Sveinsson was a co-founder of Sigur Rós, one of the most influential post-rock bands and a flagship of Icelandic music export. He has also worked closely with Ragnar Kjartansson, composed soundtracks, and written an opera.

Indrė Jurgelevičiūtė is a singer and kanklės player from Lithuania who creates otherworldly soundscapes, weaving together ambient textures, echoes of Lithuanian folk songs, and electronics. Together with Bert Cools, she forms Merope and frequently collaborates with artists such as Shahzad Ismaily, Laraaji, Jessika Kenney, and Solo Cissokho. Indrė also composes for theatre and film.

Gyða Valtýsdóttir is a member of múm, the Icelandic band that rose to prominence in the late nineties. In addition to her work with the band, the cellist has collaborated with Kronos Quartet, Damien Rice, Jónsi, Ben Frost, and Aaron and Bryce Dessner (The National).

For B-Classic, they created an entirely new program drawing on the distinctive voice of each of the four musicians. Icelandic and Lithuanian mysticism converged with minimalist piano, kanklės, cello, voices, and ambient guitar clouds.

The premiere took place during Nordic Night(s) at @CultuurcentrumHasselt. In 2026, they will once again embark on a European tour together

If you find something interesting on Instagram that you’d like to check out later or want to view stories while staying anonymous, our Viewer is perfect for you. Anonstories offers an excellent solution for keeping your identity hidden. Instagram first launched the Stories feature in August 2023, which was quickly adopted by other platforms due to its engaging, time-sensitive format. Stories let users share quick updates, whether photos, videos, or selfies, enhanced with text, emojis, or filters, and are visible for only 24 hours. This limited time frame creates high engagement compared to regular posts. In today’s world, Stories are one of the most popular ways to connect and communicate on social media. However, when you view a Story, the creator can see your name in their viewer list, which may be a privacy concern. What if you wish to browse Stories without being noticed? Here’s where Anonstories becomes useful. It allows you to watch public Instagram content without revealing your identity. Simply enter the username of the profile you’re curious about, and the tool will display their latest Stories. Features of Anonstories Viewer: - Anonymous Browsing: Watch Stories without showing up on the viewer list. - No Account Needed: View public content without signing up for an Instagram account. - Content Download: Save any Stories content directly to your device for offline use. - View Highlights: Access Instagram Highlights, even beyond the 24-hour window. - Repost Monitoring: Track the reposts or engagement levels on Stories for personal profiles. Limitations: - This tool works only with public accounts; private accounts remain inaccessible. Benefits: - Privacy-Friendly: Watch any Instagram content without being noticed. - Simple and Easy: No app installation or registration required. - Exclusive Tools: Download and manage content in ways Instagram doesn’t offer.
