The OCFA issued a new evacuation order for portions of Garden Grove, Stanton, Cypress, and Buena Park following the hazardous chemical incident. The leaking chemical, methyl methacrylate, is a volatile and highly flammable liquid. Areas under evacuation are closed to the public.

The concern is the real probability of explosion and impact to respiratory conditions.

Methyl methacrylate (MMA) is a clear, colorless industrial liquid monomer used primarily to produce acrylic plastics and resins.

Due to its exothermic properties, it generates its own heat. If it heats up too much, it can undergo a process called violent autoexplosive polymerization, which creates extreme pressure and a serious risk of explosion.

El metacrilato de metilo (MMA) es un monómero líquido industrial claro e incoloro utilizado principalmente para producir plásticos y resinas acrílicas.

Debido a que tiene propiedades exotérmicas, genera su propio calor. Si se calienta demasiado, puede sufrir un proceso llamado polimerización autoexplosiva violenta, que crea una presión extrema y un riesgo grave de explosión.

Riesgos clave de los vapores de MMA:

- Peligro grave por inhalación: Respirar los vapores concentrados causa una irritación intensa en la nariz, la garganta y los pulmones. Las altas concentraciones pueden llevar an edema pulmonar (líquido en los pulmones) y pueden ser fatales.

- Alta inflamabilidad: Los vapores son altamente volátiles y se encienden fácilmente. Si una fuente de ignición golpea la nube de vapor, puede desencadenar un incendio masivo por destello.

- Olor químico extremo: Lleva un olor increíblemente agudo, pungente y afrutado. Este olor viaja rápido con el viento, por eso las personas a millas del sitio de Garden Grove están reportando un fuerte olor a plástico.

“We’re approaching almost a year of holding it down at the Huntington Park Home Depot. While lots of things have changed and it may not feel as intense, we are still trying to keep up with the care and needs of the jornaleros every day. One of our biggest challenges is making sure our guys have water, especially as the days get hotter. Buying water daily adds up, so we wanted to ask if folks are able to help donate or drop off water directly to the Home Depot.

The Laredo train accident that resulted in the deaths of 7 people is being reduced to simply “migrants dying from human smuggling,” but United States media is failing to highlight how many of these individuals were deported and attempting to reunite with their families. Their bodies were found on Mother’s Day morning, May 10.
