@prestonlovinggood released “Tripwire” today. I had the privilege of co-writing, producing/engineering, and playing drums/bass/guitars/keys/percussion. This one is in a class of its own in my creative experience treasure chest. Thank you Preston ♥️

Preston told me about a poet @gabrielle_bates_ who had written a book of poetry called Judas Goat inspired by, among other things, her adolescence in Birmingham, AL, of which P’s music with @wildsweetorangelovesyou was a significant part. She had asked if he would consider writing a song relating to some of the poems. When Preston asked if I would be interested in exploring it with him, I was already in.

The way we came upon this song was unlike any other writing experience I’ve ever had.The reference material was powerful on its face. The words stood out merely as words artfully placed together. But then the memory and imagination the words grew down into and lit up. And then the mining and investigating of the places and times in Preston’s experience. Fall in Birmingham. What was the football team called? The Patriots. Homecoming.Parades. America. Church. Conversion and Damascus Road experiences. The opposites of those things. Addiction and bad religion. It was a world to step into, and it nourished me creatively for an incredibly long time.

We recorded it once with strong sonic reference DNA front and center. It was really really good, but we were not convinced it was right. We recorded it a second time with less literal direction and kept our references out of focus in peripheral view. It found its own DNA and grew into what Preston released today, “Tripwire”. Enjoy :)
