Main Source "Fakin' The Funk" (feat. Neek The Exotic) released May 19, 1992 on Wild Pitch Records and produced by Main Source. This was the lead to single to their unreleased sophomore album The Science and it also served as a standout record on the White Men Can't Rap EP. Main Source were above and beyond dope and Breaking Atoms literally changed the direction of rap. However "Fakin' The Funk" is widely regarded as the final collaboration with the original members and what a way to go out. This is arguably there most commercially successful record and there second number one on Billboards Hot Rap Songs chart. "Fakin' The Funk" samples an orchestrated harmony provided by The Main Ingredient that blares through the chorus while the obvious use of the iconic SP1200 drums are prominent. This song also featured an unknown (at the time) Neek The Exotic who gives a solid supporting performance. So in light of the all the bad news - "Fakin' The Funk" was the perfect example of ending on a high note. This cassette I'm showcasing is a Mint - Near Mint sealed OG copy. Thanks for looking.

It took me a minute to really take this in… to even find the words.

What can I truly say about Bob Powers?

He wasn’t just a genius — he was a friend. A real one.

We created so many records together. It started with “Fakin’ the Funk” with@mainsourceband — and he went on to mix half of the FWYT album. I’ll never forget the moments captured in that photo — us in the studio, deep in the process, building something timeless.

He mixed and played bass on Diary of a Hit Man. He mixed every record I did with @thefuschnickens — including “What’s Up Doc?” — and so much more. His fingerprints are on classics.

But beyond the credits and the records, it was his presence. The magic in the room when he was behind the board. The way he heard things nobody else could. The way he made everything better — effortlessly.

Anyone who worked with him knows exactly what I mean. You felt it. That brilliance. That energy. That superhero power in the studio.

This one hits hard.

I still can’t believe he’s gone.

Main Source "What You Need" released November 1993 on Wild Pitch Records and produced by K Cut . This was the first single to their unreleased (at that time) second album F*CK What You Think. This was probably the most anticipated and at the same time frightening release of 1993. Main Source changed the trajectory of modern day rap with their debut album Breaking Atoms. But by 1992 the original line up were at odds and found its frontman Large Professor at an enormous precipice. I have seen rock bands successfully replace there singers from Black Sabbath to Van Halen to Iron Maiden but I have never seen it done in hip hop. This was a first. Veteran Queens rapper Mikey D was brought in to fill the gigantic void of Large Professor which in my opinion wasn't fair to Mikey or the fans. However "What You Need" regardless of the bumps in the road and obvious over shadow still managed to be a dope record. This cassette I'm showcasing is a Mint -Near Mint sealed OG copy.
