Crossing Cultures - Deborah Segun

Deborah Segun (b. 1994) is a multidisciplinary artist from Lagos, Nigeria, and now based in London, UK. She obtained a degree in Fashion Design at the Polimoda Institute of Fashion Design and Marketing in Florence, Italy in 2017. During her studies in fashion, she translated her own art production into clothing, creating conceptual and sculptural wearable pieces.

Segun’s works can be described as a mix between cubism and abstraction; she takes a playful, purist approach to her work by focusing on form rather than detail through the use of different artistic mediums. Her works are mainly figurative with a focus on portraiture. The inspiration behind her works stems from her personal and shared experiences as a woman, as well as observations of any given space she occupies at a time. Segun exaggerates the figures or displaces them, as she believes it is her own way of confronting how she sees things.

Segun chooses a warm and soft composition and plays on tonal differences to portray the tenderness that comes with loving and allowing yourself to be loved by others. Her paintings showcase her resolve in strengthening relationships and connections, storing profound details of friendships through mundane events, acknowledging differences and promoting harmonious balance.

Crossing Cultures - Dana Robinson

Title: Feel The Difference
Medium: Acrylic on Wood Panel
Size: 16 x 20 in
Year: 2026

Robinson undertakes a tactile world-building process, usurping the confines of history to a compassionate effect. Confronting tensions between manufactured snapshots and material reality, her work unpacks the palpable warmth of nostalgia for ‘the good ol’ days’ through a distorted figurative lense. In a practice open to the healing possibilities of projection and personal memory, identity dissolves into visceral flashes of colour and skin. Through this body of work the artist fosters a space for belonging, curiosity, understanding, and care, offering up a universality that surpasses the struggles or triumphs of any one segment of society.

Crossing Cultures - Dana Robinson

Dana Robinson Born in 1990, is a Brooklyn-based artist, unearthing relics of the Black American Dream, and suspending them in moments of joy, power, and potential. As an artist drawn to the spaces between social movements, her work engages with a period of post-civil rights pre-crack epidemic optimism, when social mobility felt attainable and progression seemed inevitable. Revisiting this time as a source of possibility, Robinson crafts open-ended abstract images that linger in a perpetual state of anticipation. The time “before a decision is made, before the glass breaks, before the confetti hits the ground” thus holding space for an unwritten future to unfold.

Working across mediums of print, paint, collage, and textiles, the artist recontextualises advertisements and editorials from 70s Ebony magazines. Extending a sentimental connection to the characters on these pages, Robinson undertakes a tactile world-building process, usurping the confines of history to a compassionate effect. Crossing Cultures - Damien Davis

Title: Ritual For Retention
Medium: Laser-cut acrylic and stainless steel hardware
Size: 23.8 x 16 x 2 in
Year: 2026

Using digital tools to shape layers of materials both natural and synthetic, Davis composes stories, told through a lexicon of graphic figures and shapes, that oscillate between the personal memories of the artist and chapters of human history. Through usage of materials Davis exploits the seductive and subjective beauty of color and the power of color as a metaphor, Davis creates a deceptively appealing space for confronting bias and dehumanization in contemporary society.

Crossing Cultures: Where Form Meets Form on view May 8 - June 8th with Reception Friday, May 8th 6-8pm 561 Grand Street, NYC 10002.

Crossing Cultures: Where Form Meets Form is a collaborative presentation between Kates Ferri Projects and O’DA Art, bringing into dialogue two distinct yet aligned curatorial positions across New York and Lagos. The exhibition unfolds through a shared interest in how contemporary practices engage the body, material, and image as active sites of cultural production. Culture here is not fixed or inherited, but continuously shaped through movement, exchange, and encounter.

The presentation brings together Soji Adesina, Jonah Bulus, Damien Davis, Turiya Magadlela, Samuel Nnorom, Afeez Onakoya, Dana Robinson & Deborah Segun, whose practices traverse figuration and abstraction, structure and sensation. Across their works, form becomes a language through which identity is constructed and unsettled.

Extending beyond the exhibition, the project runs alongside a month-long presentation by OBIDA. Here, form shifts into the realm of the worn. Garment becomes a parallel site of construction, shaping how the body is seen, carried, and understood. In this convergence, art and fashion operate not as separate disciplines, but as interconnected practices - each informing the other, each expanding what form can hold.

Kates-Ferri Projects (KFP) and O’DA Art are pleased to present CROSSING CULTURES; a continuation of a dialogue rooted in exchange, difference, and shared inquiry, a group exhibition bringing together Afeez Onakoya, Damien Davis, Dana Robinson, Deborah Segun, Jonah Bulus, Samuel Nnorom, Soji Adesina and Turiya Magadlela.

What began as a meeting point between distinct visual languages has evolved into a sustained engagement; one that moves beyond contrast to consider how varied practices can exist in proximity, shaping and informing one another. In this context, the interplay between abstraction and figuration becomes less about opposition and more about resonance, revealing overlapping concerns around identity, form, and collective experience.

For O’DA Art, this collaboration remains significant; not only as a platform for presentation, but as a space for ongoing conversation across geographies, practices, and perspectives.

We look forward to welcoming you.
