Ever since Emily Moales embraced home recording in her teenage bedroom, she’s been attracted to new extremes of sound, process, and theme. In doing so, the musician has built her art-pop project Star Moles into an indie institution of cerebral and incandescent songwriting. On her latest album, we get a peek into Moales’ life and the thought experiments that preoccupy her.
As she announced in an album foreword (“Gone are the albums of knights and dragons...”), ‘Highway To Hell’ is a substantial pivot for a multi-instrumentalist whose songs tended to emerge from the interplay of folk epics and fairy tales.
