This was my first experience of the Aurora Borealis and it sure didn’t disappoint! It felt really good to get back out and capture nature in all of its glory! I was very unprepared for this, my camera batteries were half full, hadn’t cleared my memory cards in a while. It was a good reminder that I need to be ready for any occasion! These photos are somewhat enhanced in terms of vibrance and saturation, but not that much. My camera settings were 8” Shutter, f/2.8, ISO 800 on a Canon 5D IV with Canon 16-35mm. Been convicted about only posting screenshots of my footage here. Being able to capture movement and motion is such a crucial aspect of what I get to do and it’s been a shame and somewhat of a facade to limit those moments to single frames. Can’t say they’ll be perfect, but I think that’s what I prefer. So cheers to trying something different! Hope you enjoy!

“The man who has no imagination has no wings”

I really resonated with this quote for these exact moments.
I was crazy walking into a cold dark garage in winter and saying “that’s beautiful!” Seeing the potential in something is such a underestimated quality to have. It takes faith and imagination: crucial components in our field.

But to be honest this turned out better than I even imagined. I had planned for nice soft light to come in the windows in the top frame and we would have this grungy garage for these training scenes. I thought I’d just punch in some hard light to mimic the sun coming in from a window off camera. This corner of the garage we see here faces west and just assumed there was no way to get light flooding in through the windows at the time we were filming. Then just as we’re wrapping up we start to see this bright light creep across the concrete floor and eventually start to fill the room. It was beautiful! I quickly peek out the window to see what the heck is happening and come to find out the sun is reflecting off of a glass window from a building a block away and shining right into our windows... we maybe have a couple of minutes before we lose it! I quickly fire the camera back up and capture some of my favorite shots I think I’ve ever got.
This taught me so much about allowing myself to imagine ALL of the possibilities, to ask “What if??” I was so excited and felt thrilled about what I do in this moment, I felt weightless and was just operating on pure adrenaline. This was a pivotal moment for me and gets me so pumped for what’s to come!
