What is Elephant Hill Test Plot? LA-32 took a visit recently to the site of our Garden of the Month recipient to find out more of what happens and how we all can get involved in land stewardship. William Hourigan, one of the leads at Elephant Hill Test Plot walked us through the history and goals of the space, and how the organization is working with the community to help invite nature into our lives and neighborhood.
Nestled at the end of Lathrop St. in El Sereno, the space is always free and open to the public. Need a staycation with sun, flora, and fauna? Take a little walk up the hill and enjoy the views and the smells of spring. Need a little physical activity? Show up to a volunteer day and get busy pulling weeds and trimming plants. Want a place for the kids? Wander in the sunflowers and show them the magic of butterflies frolicing in the flowers.
If you know any exceptional gardens in LA-32 - nominate them for Garden of the Month. It is easy - visit bit.ly/4kpdhiK and fill out the form.

LA-32 had a wonderful time at the 2026 Kite Festival. Thank you @ascothillsparkla for all your hard work putting together an event where young and old could let their spirits soar, make tortugas fly, and allow their inner child run free for a few moments.
We are already looking forward to next year!

Last week LA-32 presented our April Garden of the Month award to Test Plot - Elephant Hill.
At the end of Lathrop you can find a space open to the public that features plants such as CA Buckwheat, CA sagebrush, Black and White Sage, Coyote Brush and so much more. The site, which started in 2022, has stewarded 10,000 sq ft of new habitat and 20,000 sq ft of invasive species removal.
To maintain a site so large requires many hands, and this space has four team leads, and many volunteers. Joseph Farewell (and family), William Hourigan, and Francisco Ruiz, who are the point people for the site, were on hand at our LA-32 meeting to receive the award and to provide new insights into the space.
The Test Plot team noted that spring is the moment where the space is at its most lush and flowers bloom at every corner, so if you are looking for a way to spend an afternoon, it is free and open to the public.

LA-32 Neighborhood Council recently held a pop up to collect supplies for the El Sereno Community Center's Garden Group, and we were thrilled with the turn out of materials!
We were able to give the center tools, pots, cuttings, and more.
Thank you to all that donated and thank you to Ascot Hills Park for allowing us to stage our pop-up there 🙂.
This was our first collection, but it won't be our last, so keep your eyes open for more pop-up donation dates!

As we wrap up March, LA-32 took a visit to our Garden of the Month Award recipient's lovely home garden. A fruit and veg forward space, Ariel Oakley and Joshua Pelletier's garden is a delight for the senses, with so much to smell and eat, depending on what is in season.
A collaborative work that began as a way to relieve stress, it has now become a path of joy, exploration, and community. Ariel and Josh provide a good model on how a garden can be low-stress and always give back more than you put in.

LA-32 was excited to present our March Garden of the Month award to Ariel Oakley and Joshua Pelletier. The council was touched by the story of their garden, a fruit and veggie forward space that was born during the pandemic to create a place of respite for them, but has now transformed into a place of connection as they share their abundant crops within the community.
Three cheers for creating new paths for togetherness and sharing from materials that are right outside your door.

Today we have the pleasure of bringing you the last installment about pollinator gardens by our February Garden of the Month recipient Stephanie Orellana.
Now that you have been inspired by Stephanie to plant a pollinator garden, you probably have questions such as:
"What kind of plants do I plant?"
"When should I plant?"
or even
"This looks fun, but can I do it?"
Stephanie has answers to all of that in today's video! 🙂 We hope you all feel inspired to grab some gardening gloves and a little bit of sunshine and get out and try your hand at bringing additional exciting and fascinating pollinators to our community.
Still looking for more tips and tricks with your SoCal home garden? Follow Stephanie at @el.serenity.garden. She is a wealth of info all year long!
