something i’ve come to learn is gender is so personal. there is so much to untangle in your brain. stuff that we never share, about what makes us feel worthy, or sexy enough, man enough, woman enough. the preprogrammed ways to describe masculinity and femininity that we must unravel to feel autonomy. the hard realization that you’ve been performing an act you didn’t know you were putting on. the stockholm syndrome with being sexually desired. the way it stings a little when they stop cat calling, before you process that it feels better and safer. it feels better to be acknowledged for what’s in my brain and in my heart than for how long my legs are or how small my clothes are. for me. maybe not for someone else. maybe the person next to me wants to be catcalled by men because they know that to be the experience of a woman, and maybe that feels fucking affirming. and that’s okay too. because we are all learning how to respond to the binary and to the world around us. learning WE choose who we are. there’s so much happening behind the scenes for your trans friends and family that you may not see.
6 years ago, all i could get out was “i know im a girl, BUT…im not a boy, BUT” to my little sister every day in my room. 4 years ago i started using they/ them pronouns publicly, it’s been 4 years of talking about my fluidity and 4 years of growing more comfortable in my own skin as a trans masc nonbinary!! there are days that labels feel off and days that labels feel so god damn good. what feels the best though is waking up and making all the choices i make about my body for ME. as a young teenage girl, every choice i made about my appearance had to do with seeking the validation of men and other women who were patriarchy driven. Now it’s about feeling comfortable and sexy in my body, not pushing it into being something it’s not. if in a year that looks like something different then i will evolve once more. here is to a lifetime of being the most authentic version of myself everyday, no matter what that looks like.

6 years ago, all i could get out was “i know im a girl, BUT…im not a boy, BUT” to my little sister every day in my room. 4 years ago i started using they/ them pronouns publicly, it’s been 4 years of talking about my fluidity and 4 years of growing more comfortable in my own skin as a trans masc nonbinary!! there are days that labels feel off and days that labels feel so god damn good. what feels the best though is waking up and making all the choices i make about my body for ME. as a young teenage girl, every choice i made about my appearance had to do with seeking the validation of men and other women who were patriarchy driven.
