Spring always feels like a fresh start through a macro lens 🌸
10 tiny moments that remind me why I love macro photography this time of year. When the first flowers open and insects return, the world suddenly feels full of color, softness, and movement again. 😍 Tulips, snowdrops, lilac, blossoms, bees, and ladybugs, all photographed up close with my 90mm macro lens to reveal the details you might otherwise miss.
Spring is one of the most rewarding seasons for flower photography. Nature awakens, and there are ever-changing flowers to photograph from March to the last day of May, making you slow down and look closer 🔍
𝗠𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗼 𝗽𝗵𝗼𝘁𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗵𝘆 𝘁𝗶𝗽:
Get down to eye level with your subject and shoot through nearby flowers or leaves to create soft foreground blur ✨
This adds depth and dreamy framing without relying too much on editing.
If you love macro photography, flower photography, or are looking for spring photography inspiration, save this for your next photo walk 🌿
Which spring flower or detail do you enjoy photographing the most?
All photos taken with Sony a7 IV + Sony 90mm F2.8 G OSS macro lens.

A highlight from my recent photo walk 🦋🌸
I was already heading home after photographing spring in the city when I spotted a gorgeous plum tree by the side of the road. I stopped to capture the blooming branches, turned slightly to the right... and there it was - this beautiful butterfly sleeping between the blossoms 🥹
The Sun had already set, so I had to act quickly with the little light I had left. The butterfly stayed perfectly calm and did not mind me at all, but the wind was a different story. It kept blowing the branches in every direction, making it much harder to capture clear shots 🫠
I waited between the wind gusts and photographed during those tiny calmer moments. It reminded me a lot of the bee in blossoms photoshoot, where I shared a deeper behind-the-scenes look and my tricks for photographing in windy conditions on Patreon 🐝
The little moments like this remind me why I love nature photography so much 🥹🩷
This photo is a 3-image focus stack. Since the light was limited, I photographed at f/2.8, but that also meant the depth of field was very shallow. Taking multiple shots helped me keep the whole butterfly sharp while still keeping the soft, dreamy background.
💡 I have also shared an easy focus bracketing technique on Patreon for creating stacks like this, even without relying on your camera's built-in focus bracketing feature.
⚙️ Photo settings: Sony a7 IV + FE 100mm F2.8 Macro GM OSS | 1/250s, f/2.8, ISO 800, 3 photo focus stack | 02.05.2026.

Hidden details inside a crocus 💜🧡
The details of crocus pollen are always so fascinating to see up close. From the outside, we usually notice the beautiful purple petals first, but once you look deeper into the flower, there is a whole tiny world waiting inside.
Through a macro lens, the center of a crocus becomes full of texture, shapes, and glowing yellow pollen grains. I love how these tiny details almost look like another landscape hidden inside the flower ✨
This is one of the reasons I enjoy macro photography so much. It lets me slow down and notice the details that are so easy to miss with the naked eye.
Swipe to see the pollen even closer!

Cotton candy bokeh for macro photography 🌸
This time, I wanted to create a soft pastel background for this daisy flower, but instead of looking for the perfect light, I made the background myself 👇🏻
I used the SmallRig RM 03 Macro Photo LED lights together with a simple piece of aluminium foil.
💡Here's how to create a scene like this:
1️⃣ Crumble up some aluminium foil and place it in the background
2️⃣ Shine colorful LED lights on the background. I used two red and one warm white
3️⃣ Use a wide aperture to turn the background into gorgeous soft pink and orange bokeh ✨
It honestly looked like cotton candy behind the flower 😍🩷
What I really appreciate about these lights for macro is how easy they are to position in tiny scenes. The flexible arm helped me balance them in the grass and angle each light exactly where I needed it, without making the setup feel too complicated.
A very simple behind the scenes trick, but it completely changed the mood of the photo ✨
If you want to check them out, I added the link in my bio for a limited time, or you can use this one: https://smallrig.com/r/WEMWWS

Dreamy pink Bird-in-a-Bush flowers, isolated against a field of others. The pink beauties of Spring 🩷 Swipe for a close up!
The "Bird-in-a-Bush" flower is named for its unique, spurred blossoms that resemble tiny, purple-pink birds perched or "nestling" within the plant's surrounding fern-like foliage ✨
I always find these flowers challenging to photograph. So much so that I believe this is the first time I'm sharing this flower in my feed.
I have plenty of flowers I struggle to photograph, and often end up ditching the photos, including lilies, rhododendrons, and daffodils. 🫠 This is due to their complex shape and the challenge of photographing all the key areas sharply while still isolating them beautifully.
Are there flowers you struggle with photographing, too?

A quick lunch break turned into a tiny macro hunt 🐝💜
While in the city, I noticed bees buzzing around these crocuses and instantly grabbed my camera. They were moving so fast from flower to flower that getting a clean shot felt almost impossible at first.
💡 𝗣𝗵𝗼𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗶𝗽:
Instead of chasing them, I changed my approach. I picked a flower where a bee was already inside, set up my composition, and waited. The moment it crawled out, I captured these frames. That simple shift made all the difference.
Sometimes it is not about being faster, but about being ready.
Also, it is my birthday today, so I will be out celebrating with family and enjoying the day 🤍

Sunshine amongst the windy Sakuras 🐝
Last weekend I visited a sakura garden, hoping to photograph the blossoms before the storm arrived. But the wind had already picked up, making it nearly impossible to capture sharp photos of the branches.
🤨 "So how did you end up photographing bees in these conditions?"
That is the funniest part. The wind was still strong, but the moment I spotted this tiny bee resting in one of the blossoms, I knew I had to adapt and change my approach.
The wind did not stop me. Instead, it pushed me to work differently, and I managed to capture these macro moments of a visitor that truly made my day 🥹
Curious how I photographed this in such windy conditions? I shared a full behind-the-scenes post for my Patreon and Instagram subscribers, including a video where I go through the setup, techniques, and settings 🤍
Later, the bee even crawled onto my hand to warm up, which gave me the chance to capture focus stacks too. I will be sharing those soon.
Swipe to see the tiny bee cleaning itself. How adorable is that? 🥹

Dancing between the purples 🦋
This spring, the butterflies haven't given me many chances to photograph their beauty yet. I was photographing the pasqueflowers in the dreamy sunlight when I noticed a butterfly approaching a nearby flower. I immediately turned my camera towards the beautiful visitor and snapped just a couple of photos before it flew away.
Luckily for me, one of them turned out just right: the petals did not obscure the butterfly, and the eye was perfectly sharp!
My goal with this edit was to accentuate the dreaminess and reduce the harsh lighting created by the Sun. I used masking with the Dehaze slider to soften the background and make it dreamier ✨
I share editing tutorials and photography tips on my Patreon. If you want to learn to capture and edit macro photos like I do, pop in for a visit! 💜

The perfect camouflage 🕷️🩵
A very unexpected find while photographing bee flies. They were flying between these periwinkle flowers, and I noticed one inside a flower and not really moving.
With a closer inspection and light poking, I realized that it had fallen victim to this white crab spider. 🙊
As the bee fly fell, the spider revealed itself in the center of the flower, camouflaging as a stamen, ready to catch anyone who dares to approach this 'flower' center 🕷️
Isn't Nature truly fascinating? 💙
