Arabfuturist author Mahmud El Sayed (@mahmud0elsayed) is helping redefine the future of science fiction through stories centred on Arab voices, histories, and political realities.
Speaking to The New Arab, El Sayed — winner of the 2023 Future Worlds Prize for Fantasy and Science Fiction Writers of Colour (@futureworldsprize) — discusses why meaningful Arab representation in sci-fi matters and how the genre can serve as a space to explore identity, resistance, and revolution.
His debut novel, 'The Republic of Memory,' is set aboard a generation ship carrying the descendants of a dying Earth as they journey towards a new world. The story follows a crew pushed to breaking point as blackouts, unrest, and rebellion threaten the fragile order of life on the Safina. Inspired by the Arab Spring, the novel is a bold exploration of empire, collective memory, and liberation.
