🌸 Trio Magnoliana’s Taiwan debut 🇹🇼💫

A little vlog from an unforgettable trip -
masterclasses with talented young musicians at HSNU 師大附中, Soochow University 東吳大學, and NTNU 師範大學, and a special performance at the National Recital Hall.

Grateful to share music by Chebotaryan, Beethoven, Nicky Sohn @berliozsgirlfriend (world premiere!), and Ravel with audiences in Taipei 💕

Also so fun to visit Taipei 101 (recently made famous again by Alex Honnold’s free-solo climb!), Dihua Street, Addiction Aquatic and more ✨

We’re looking forward to a busy March of performances around Houston and in Taiwan! 🤠✈️🇹🇼

You can catch us multiple times this month, beginning with our opening concert this Sunday, March 1st (3:00pm) at @clearlakeumc , and on our home turf of @uhmooresschool on Thursday, March 5 (6:00pm).

We are particularly thrilled to bring this program to our Taiwan debut at the National Concert Hall in Taipei City alongside the world premiere of a new work written for the trio by Nicky Sohn 🌸

The cycle concludes on March 20 with a performance at Cultural Center - Our Texas, presented by celebrated conductor and former music director of the Houston Symphony, Maestro Hans Graf.

Very soon after this, we head to Albuquerque, NM for an entirely new program including several new commissions and world premieres 🐍✨

We’re thrilled to share that Trio Magnoliana is making its Taiwan debut on March 14, 2026 at the National Recital Hall! 🇹🇼✨

Our debut program spans classical brilliance and contemporary voices, featuring works by

I was humbly reminded of something my dear mentor Glenn Dicterow once said that stuck with me: even the simplest note, like an open G whole note, can feel nerve-wracking when it’s marked “solo.”

It’s been so great to meet amazing people and re-connect with old friends. Happy Holidays, everyone!

Master improviser, violinist, and author Stephen Nachmanovitch will perform a recital with guest collaborator Blake Wilkins (Head of Percussion at MSM) and lead an immersive, hands-on workshop. Explore the art of free improvisation as a way to connect across disciplines, cultures, and identities. This collaborative session invites musicians, dancers, artists, writers, and creative thinkers of all backgrounds to listen, respond, and create together in the moment. Through play and discovery, participants will experience how spontaneity can open new pathways of communication and creativity—within ourselves and with one another. 
 
All are welcome! Bring your instrument if you wish, but it’s not a requirement.

Stephen is an improvisational violinist, electronic artist and author, whose work bridges music, creativity, and consciousness. He studied at Harvard University and the University of California at Santa Cruz, where he earned a PhD in the History of Consciousness for an exploration of William Blake. His mentor was the anthropologist and philosopher Gregory Bateson. At Harvard he worked with Jerome Bruner and Irven DeVore.
