Jemima, the first Countess of Sandwich, was not a woman who stayed quiet 👀

She moved in the same circles as Samuel Pepys, one of the most famous diarists in history. He wrote about almost everything and everyone in 17th century London. Including her.

At one point she told him directly to be more generous to his wife. Which, given Pepys’ reputation, was quite something.

She clearly had a voice and she wasn’t afraid to use it.

The naval paintings tell their own story. The connection to the sea runs deep at Mapperton and the 4th Earl even inspired a young George III’s interest in naval reform.
