"What the farmer doesn't know, I'll eat" is the title of my collection and a variation of an old German proverb: What the farmer doesn't know, he won't eat.
I found this proverb fitting since I grew up on the countryside and traditional festive costumes from German villages are a unifying element of my collection.
Growing up as a queer person was not always easy in the countryside and my collection is emblematic of my meta-me that experienced different stages of personality development.
There are three occasions to wear each outfit:
The funeral, the phase of breaking out and the wedding.
I am going through a process of rebirth throughout the collection and seize the once daunting rural culture.
It is about a queer act of reclaiming and celebration of what once deterred me.
The first look of the collection in particular is called "the mourning costume.“
The intention was to create an outfit that looks gloomy and romantic at the same time.
The head veiled in a bow that completely obscures it and seemingly threatens to suffocate the person wearing it.
The silhouette monumental and voluminous. On the back a hump that hints to the burden that I once carried with me.
I was heavily inspired by the darkness of traditional costumes alongside different regions of Germany such as Schaumburg.
Everything is black, only a glimpse of colour can be seen underneath the bow.
