When storms or outages happen, safety comes first. Here’s what MGE wants you to know 👇
⛈️ Downed Power Lines
• Stay at least 30 feet away (about a bus length)
• Assume every downed line is energized—even if it’s quiet
• Keep away from puddles, trees, fences or anything touching a line
• Never touch someone being shocked or anything caught in a power line
• Call MGE at 608‑252‑7000 immediately
🚗 If a Line Falls on Your Car
• Stay inside if safe
• Don’t touch metal surfaces
• If you must exit, jump clear and shuffle away with feet together
🔌 Using Generators
• Only use generators outside, far from windows and doors
• Never connect directly to home wiring—this can seriously injure crews
• Use outdoor‑rated extension cords or a licensed transfer switch
🩺 Life‑Sustaining Equipment
• Have a backup plan if electricity is critical for medical needs
• Notify MGE ahead of time with proper documentation

Electricity is part of everyday life—but it can be dangerous without the right precautions. Here are a few simple ways to stay safe:
🏠 Indoors
• Never use appliances with wet hands
• Keep electrical devices away from sinks, tubs and water
• Unplug small appliances when not in use
• Check cords for damage and keep them away from kids and pets
• Cover unused outlets with plug protectors
🌳 Outdoors
• Avoid downed power lines
• Stay far away from power lines and substations
• Keep water from hoses and sprinklers away from overhead lines
• Never fly kites, balloons or drones near power lines
• If something gets caught in a power line, don’t touch it—call MGE
🚧 Before You Dig
• Damaging underground lines is dangerous and costly
• Always call 811 before you dig
Your body is a strong conductor of electricity—small shocks can cause serious harm. A little awareness goes a long way. 💡
