This is what started it all. A few years ago I reached out to an old acquaintance, Nilan Perera, some 20 years since we had last spoken. That conversation led to my return to the free-improvised music scene, which led to a Canada Council grant to explore the texture of imagery, which led to this sketch (every scene in this video uses a different sensor and lens combo), which led to an MFA in Film (in progress) which led to my current practice of freely-improvising a film on free improvisation — a project that is almost ready for exhibition... But in the meantime, I thought I'd share this — what started it all.

What part of our story has been inspiring to you?

The Process of how we made this album is as important to us as the music itself. From the initial co-writing between @authorevatihanyi and @carliehowell_is_carliehowell , to forming the ensemble, working with the engineers to choosing the pressing plant, this entire album has been about co-creation, and what we could make with all our powers combined.

Some memories of The Ministry of Phonic Services Back To School Field Trip 2025!

What’s your favourite part of co-creation?

We were so lucky to have filmmakers @michael.filippov and @ana_figo join us throughout the process to document how we’ve worked together to create this album!

Over the next weeks we’ll be sharing our 4 part mini documentary series, starting with #4 The Conditions To Create.

The suite of music was a co-creation between @authorevatihanyi and @carliehowell_is_carliehowell , but it was brought to life by each of the members of the band, and the sound of our collective voice.

Authentically including the voices of 15+ people isn’t accidental, it’s the result of intentional collaboration, something we’re really proud of.
