Just over a month ago, a very dear and close relative's response to learn I was modelling was that they were embarrassed to hear it. They were shocked and with clear disdain, it was incomprehensible to them, that 'someone like myself' (not stereotypically symmetrically pretty or tall or whatever else they thought a model should look like) could actually be paid to model for clients. Not only that but I chose to leave a decent job in the corporate IT industry, for what exactly!!

I completed my first year of professional modelling last month. I'd never considered modelling let alone pivot to such an extent.

For me, inclusivity, diversity and visibility remain at the forefront. I can only hope that running free with the model baton helps to breakdown pre-conceived judgement of what a woman should look like and what she should do with her life, not just within my culture but within cultures the world over.

I'm blessed and grateful, humbled and proud, thankful to my agencies and respective clients for all the opportunities and my achievements this past year 🫶

And my response to my oh so dear relative? 'That may be so but that's your problem, not mine'.

March 2020 triggered a monumental and positive shift in my desire to ditch the dye. It wasn't that I didn't want to let go of the weekly chore of covering up my roots, it was more so a reluctance and anxiety to be seen as anything less than worthy by my family, my peers and society in general.

This post isn't about how my transition journey progressed or about convincing anyone to 'ditch the dye'.

It's about letting go...letting go of the shame I had been made to feel, letting go of others' expectations, letting go of feeling like I needed to be 'fixed'.

So here is this one shot (thank you hubby, my patient assistant ☺️). I had a vision to present a bird's eye view of what 'acceptance versus forced' looked like for me. It is and will always be my personal, all time inspirational shot.

It's not about hair and I don't need to be cured. It's about breaking the shackles and finding strength within; my peace, my stillness, my identity.

Here's to my 6️⃣ year 'sil-versary'...
