New Book: Mindful Self-Compassion for Burnout

Loneliness isn’t always about who is around us.
Sometimes, it’s about how far we’ve drifted from ourselves.
ㅤ
Self-compassion invites us back into our own presence.
Not to fix or force anything, but to meet ourselves with kindness and care.

What if the harshest voice in your head was replaced by the best coach you ever had?
Kristin Neff trained NCAA athletes in self-compassion on the No Magic Pill podcast and the results are not what most competitive people would expect. When she taught them to treat themselves the way a great coach would, their performance actually improved. Rated by both the coaches and the athletes themselves.
And here is what a great coach does not do. They do not say do not worry about it, you are fine, when you are not fine. But they also do not tear you apart and tell you that you are worthless unless you get it right. They say I believe in you. Here is what would help. They give you honest, constructive feedback from a place of genuine care. That is it.
Most of us were never taught to do that for ourselves. We either go too soft and avoid the truth or we go to war with ourselves and call it discipline. Kristin's research shows that neither works as well as the middle path. Separate your worth as a person from your performance. Care deeply about improving. And talk to yourself the way someone who truly believed in you would.
I wish someone had taught me this when I was playing competitive tennis. It would have changed everything.
What would you do differently if your inner voice sounded more like your best coach and less like your worst critic?

Most people think burnout happens because you stopped caring.
Kristin Neff told me on the No Magic Pill podcast that it's actually the opposite. The more you care, the more susceptible you are to burnout. Because it means more to you. So when the overwhelm hits and you have no self-compassion to fall back on, your brain does something counterintuitive. It starts caring less just to cope. Then you blame yourself for caring less. Then you spiral.
I lived in that loop for years. Overcommitted, overwhelmed, shutting down, and then beating myself up for shutting down. Nobody ever told me that the spiral wasn't a character flaw. It was a completely predictable response to never asking myself one simple question. Is this too much for me right now?
That question alone could have saved me years of unnecessary pain.
Are you in that spiral right now or have you found a way out of it?

💛 What would you say to a good friend who’s just messed up? Why would what you’d say to yourself be any different?
Self-esteem starts with self-talk. @neffselfcompassion covers practical ways to encourage our kids to be more self-compassionate that are tactile, audible, and by example, and reminds us that our worth is dependent not on success, but on how we treat ourselves.

The research says that removing your self-worth from your performance actually makes you perform better. That is not intuitive. But it is true.
Kristin Neff walked me through the science on the No Magic Pill podcast and it brought me straight back to being a competitive tennis player who could not get a serve in the court during a match I was favored to win. I had tied my entire identity to the outcome. And the moment the pressure was on, my subconscious took over. The background noise got so loud I could not function. What is this going to mean? What happens if I lose? Who am I if I don't win this?
That is not a mental weakness. That is what happens to any human being who has attached their worth to a result. Kristin's research shows that when you know, win or lose, I am enough as a person, that noise quiets down. You stop taking it personally. You get out of your own way. And paradoxically you perform at a higher level because your mind is finally free to just focus on what is in front of you.
Feeling enough is not the soft option. It is the competitive advantage nobody talks about.
Have you ever let the pressure of what something meant about you get in the way of actually performing?

I built TOMS into a company that gave away 100 million pairs of shoes. And for most of that journey I was running on extrinsic motivation without even knowing it had a name.
I was doing it to prove something. To appear good. To earn my place. Kristin Neff came on the No Magic Pill podcast and gave me the language for something I had never been able to articulate. There are two reasons anyone does anything. Because they want to. Or because they feel they have to. And most high performers, myself included, have built entire careers on the second one while telling themselves it was the first.
Here is what Kristin taught me that I have not stopped thinking about. That flow state that athletes describe where everything rises naturally and performance feels effortless, that is intrinsic motivation in its purest form. You cannot force your way into it. You cannot perform your way into it. The background noise of what will people think, what does this mean if I fail, am I enough, that noise is exactly what blocks it.
The path to flow is not more hustle. It is more honesty about why you are doing what you are doing in the first place.
I had to learn to say no to my own excitement. Not out of harshness but out of care. Sustainable and healthy is not giving up. It is wisdom.
Are you doing what you are doing because you want to or because you feel you have to?

I spent most of my life doing things for the wrong reason and had no idea there was even a word for it.
Kristin Neff broke it down on the No Magic Pill podcast in the simplest way I have ever heard. Intrinsic motivation is doing something because you want to, because it fulfills your values, because it lights you up. Extrinsic motivation is doing it to look good, to meet someone else's expectations, or because you are terrified of disappointing people. I lived in extrinsic for a long time. Built a company from it. Won awards from it. And burned out completely from it.
What Kristin said next is what stopped me. That flow state that athletes describe, where everything just rises naturally and performance feels effortless, that is almost always a state of intrinsic motivation. You are not pushing. You are not performing for anyone. You are just fully in it because it feels right.
I have felt that state. And I have also spent years chasing it through extrinsic fuel and wondering why it never lasted.
When was the last time you did something purely because it felt right and not because of what anyone else would think?

The person I have had to learn to say no to the most is myself.
Kristin Neff said something on the No Magic Pill podcast that I have probably thought about every single day since we recorded it. You don't have to do everything that you have a great idea to get done. The excitement is not the green light. And for someone like me who runs on enthusiasm and big ideas, that was a hard truth to sit with.
But here is the part that really landed. When you know you have done enough, you actually end up doing more. Not because you feel you have to. Because you want to. That is the difference between a life that feels like obligation and a life that feels like purpose. I spent decades in the have to. Building companies, launching projects, saying yes to everything my excitement told me to chase. And I burned out every single time.
The want to is quieter. But it is so much more sustainable.
What is something you are doing right now out of have to that you wish felt like want to?

The Instagram Story Viewer is an easy tool that lets you secretly watch and save Instagram stories, videos, photos, or IGTV. With this service, you can download content and enjoy it offline whenever you like. If you find something interesting on Instagram that you’d like to check out later or want to view stories while staying anonymous, our Viewer is perfect for you. Anonstories offers an excellent solution for keeping your identity hidden. Instagram first launched the Stories feature in August 2023, which was quickly adopted by other platforms due to its engaging, time-sensitive format. Stories let users share quick updates, whether photos, videos, or selfies, enhanced with text, emojis, or filters, and are visible for only 24 hours. This limited time frame creates high engagement compared to regular posts. In today’s world, Stories are one of the most popular ways to connect and communicate on social media. However, when you view a Story, the creator can see your name in their viewer list, which may be a privacy concern. What if you wish to browse Stories without being noticed? Here’s where Anonstories becomes useful. It allows you to watch public Instagram content without revealing your identity. Simply enter the username of the profile you’re curious about, and the tool will display their latest Stories. Features of Anonstories Viewer: - Anonymous Browsing: Watch Stories without showing up on the viewer list. - No Account Needed: View public content without signing up for an Instagram account. - Content Download: Save any Stories content directly to your device for offline use. - View Highlights: Access Instagram Highlights, even beyond the 24-hour window. - Repost Monitoring: Track the reposts or engagement levels on Stories for personal profiles. Limitations: - This tool works only with public accounts; private accounts remain inaccessible. Benefits: - Privacy-Friendly: Watch any Instagram content without being noticed. - Simple and Easy: No app installation or registration required. - Exclusive Tools: Download and manage content in ways Instagram doesn’t offer.
Keep track of Instagram updates discreetly while protecting your privacy and staying anonymous.
