New Zealander, Kate Hawley grew up immersed in the world of opera and theatre. After studying graphic design, she earned a scholarship to attend The Motley School of Theatre Design in London, where she trained under Margaret Harris and Alison Chitty. Hawley’s feature film credits as a costume designer include collaborations with Guillermo del Toroon Frankenstein, Crimson Peak, and Pacific Rim. Her extensive theatre and opera work includes productions of Lucia di Lammermoor and La Bohème with New Zealand Opera. She also served as both costume and production designer for Albert Herring at the Aldeburgh Festival in England. Hawley’s designs have been featured in numerous exhibitions, including The Art of Frankenstein at Selfridges in London, At Home with Monsters at Los Angeles County Museum of Art in Los Angeles,and exhibitions at the Art Gallery of Ontario. Her work on Frankenstein has received widespread acclaim, earning honors including Best Costume Design awards from the Academy Awards,BAFTA, the Costume Designers Guild, and the Critics’ Choice Awards.
