Coming up 🏡 🌈 | Author Brian Schaefer joins us to discuss his debut novel, Town & Country, with New York State Senator Erik Bottcher.

The trendy rural town of Griffin has become a popular destination for weekenders and the city’s second homeowners, but now a congressional race in this swing district is highlighting tensions between life-long residents and new arrivals. The campaign pits local pub owner and town supervisor Chip Riley against the wealthy young carpetbagger Paul Banks, challenging the social and political loyalties of their families and friends with lasting repercussions.

Spanning six months from Memorial Day to Election Day, Town & Country paints a kaleidoscopic portrait of a community in flux. For readers of Fredrick Backman and Jen Beagin, this “powerful and extremely well-written book” (Colum McCann, National Book Award winner) asks the essential and timeless questions: What makes a home, and what do we owe our neighbors?

Thursday at 6:30 | Bonnie Friedman explores ambition, desire, and the dangerous pursuit of self-knowledge in her first novel Don’t Stop, which she’ll discuss at this event with award-winning writer Dawn Raffel.

Ina is a 41-year-old literary scholar on the cusp of professional success. With a coveted university job, a kind husband, and a book on Eugene O’Neill due in months, her life appears enviably stable. But when an impulsive kiss with a stranger shatters her self-control, Ina finds herself plunged into an erotic and emotional freefall.

Set in Brooklyn and Manhattan at the turn of the millennium, Don’t Stop is a bold, immersive debut that explores what happens when a woman dares to want more—of the world, of her body, of herself. Bonnie Friedman delivers a novel of transgression, transformation, and unapologetic longing.

Next week | Sarah Goodyear and Doug Gordon, hosts of The War on Cars podcast, join us to discuss their book, Life After Cars: Freeing Ourselves from the Tyranny of the Automobile, with moderator Gersh Kuntzman.

When the very first cars rolled off production lines, they were a technological marvel, predicted to make life easier and better for everyone; yet a hundred years later, that dream is running on empty. Instead of unbounded freedom, the never-ending proliferation of automobiles has delivered a host of costs, among them the demolition of our neighborhoods, towns, and cities to make way for car infrastructure; an epidemic of violent death; countless hours lost in traffic; isolation from our fellow human beings; and the ongoing destruction of the natural world.

In Life After Cars, through historical records, revealing interviews, and unflinching statistics, Sarah Goodyear and Doug Gordon, with former podcast host Aaron Naparstek unpack the scale of damage that cars cause, the forces that have created our current crisis and are invested in perpetuating it, and the way that the fight for better transportation is deeply linked to the fight for a more equitable and just society.

Next week 🌱 | Join us for a screening of Maria De Luca’s internationally-acclaimed documentary about community gardens in the 1970s and 80s in New York City, Green Streets, followed by a talkback with the filmmaker. [Image caption: Freeze frame from "Green Streets", Rochedale, Queens by Maria DeLuca (1976).]

Refuting the notion that the urban environment is inhospitable to organic life, Green Streets (1989) documents a wide range of community gardens that have been established in each of New York City’s five boroughs and which reflect the city’s multicultural diversity. Carrying on the mission of the Urban Community Gardening Movement that sprang up informally in the 1970’s, adult and young people alike have taken up spades and shovels to clear abandoned, rubble-strewn lots for flower and vegetable gardens. Cameras visit a “soul food garden,” a penthouse arboretum, a playground erected from old tires, a circular garden designed by a modern-day “Adam” and “Eve,” and a therapeutic rooftop retreat for recovering substance abusers. At the film’s upbeat conclusion, urban tillers proudly display prizes won at the Annual Tenant Gardening Competition.

Next week | Author and journalist Michael Luo sits down to discuss his lauded narrative history Strangers in the Land: Exclusion, Belonging, and the Epic Story of the Chinese in America with best-selling author and civil rights lawyer Qian Julie Wang.

In Strangers in the Land, award-winning journalist Michael Luo tells the story of a people who, beginning in the middle of the nineteenth century, migrated by the tens of thousands to a distant land they called Gum Shan––Gold Mountain. Americans initially welcomed these Chinese arrivals, but, as their numbers grew, horrific episodes of racial terror erupted on the Pacific coast. Federal lawmakers enacted legislation aimed at excluding Chinese laborers from the country, the first time the United States barred a people based on their race. The Chinese became the country’s earliest undocumented immigrants: hounded, counted, suspected, surveilled.

In 1889, while upholding Chinese exclusion, Supreme Court Justice Stephen J. Field characterized them as “strangers in the land.” Only in 1965 did America’s gates swing open to people like Luo’s parents, immigrants from Taiwan. Today there are more than twenty-two million people of Asian descent in the United States and yet the “stranger” label, Luo writes, remains. Drawing on archives from across the country and written with style and sweep, Strangers in the Land is a revelatory and unforgettable American story.

The Producers & Engineers Craft Session brought together music people for a day of educational workshops, including navigating producer & engineer deals, building your brand and network, managing interpersonal dynamics, in-the-box mixing, and much more. The program also included a special fireside chat with legendary Grammy Award winner @nilerodgers moderated by Grammy-nominated artist and producer, @alissia .

Shoutout to our first-ever Studio Hub in Boston, MA, and a big thank you to everyone who joined the Fireside Chat livestream!

View Instagram Stories in Secret

The Instagram Story Viewer is an easy tool that lets you secretly watch and save Instagram stories, videos, photos, or IGTV. With this service, you can download content and enjoy it offline whenever you like. If you find something interesting on Instagram that you’d like to check out later or want to view stories while staying anonymous, our Viewer is perfect for you. Anonstories offers an excellent solution for keeping your identity hidden. Instagram first launched the Stories feature in August 2023, which was quickly adopted by other platforms due to its engaging, time-sensitive format. Stories let users share quick updates, whether photos, videos, or selfies, enhanced with text, emojis, or filters, and are visible for only 24 hours. This limited time frame creates high engagement compared to regular posts. In today’s world, Stories are one of the most popular ways to connect and communicate on social media. However, when you view a Story, the creator can see your name in their viewer list, which may be a privacy concern. What if you wish to browse Stories without being noticed? Here’s where Anonstories becomes useful. It allows you to watch public Instagram content without revealing your identity. Simply enter the username of the profile you’re curious about, and the tool will display their latest Stories. Features of Anonstories Viewer: - Anonymous Browsing: Watch Stories without showing up on the viewer list. - No Account Needed: View public content without signing up for an Instagram account. - Content Download: Save any Stories content directly to your device for offline use. - View Highlights: Access Instagram Highlights, even beyond the 24-hour window. - Repost Monitoring: Track the reposts or engagement levels on Stories for personal profiles. Limitations: - This tool works only with public accounts; private accounts remain inaccessible. Benefits: - Privacy-Friendly: Watch any Instagram content without being noticed. - Simple and Easy: No app installation or registration required. - Exclusive Tools: Download and manage content in ways Instagram doesn’t offer.
