The film tracks Niki de Saint Phalle from the early 1950s—when she arrives in France with her husband and daughter—to the moment she begins to channel her trauma into art. Haunted by memories from her past, she endures psychiatric hospitalization and electroshock therapy. As her pain transforms into creative drive, we witness the emergence of a bold, revolutionary artist.

Visually, Sallette employs vibrant, saturated palettes and occasional split-screen to reflect Niki’s inner turbulence. Victor Seguin’s cinematography accentuates both the intimacy of psychiatric confinement and the exuberance of her artist’s mind. The minimalistic yet evocative score by Para One underscores emotional crescendos without overwhelming them.

At its core, the film is a meditation on emancipation—psychological and creative. Niki's journey is portrayed as an act of liberation from personal and societal oppressions. Art becomes her weapon and refuge—through expressions of color, gesture, and rebellion, she reclaims agency.

Niki premiered in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for the Caméra d’Or. It also received the Special Ecoprod Jury Prize at Cannes for its environmentally conscious production practices. Critics have praised Charlotte Le Bon’s visceral portrayal, though some highlighted the film’s fragmented narrative and the absence of Niki’s actual artworks onscreen.
