When Crimpshrine dissolved in 1989, the band Fifteen rose from the ashes, tackling homelessness, addiction, and civil rights. Suzanne Onodera and Orlando Xavier at the book tour panel discussion for We’re Having Much More Fun. A chapter in the book is focused on Orlando, based interviews with him. Suzanne’s Sproul Plaza fliers, and recollections make up other portions of the book. We all went to Berkeley High, Orlando being a few classes older, and Suzanne and I pals ever since (numerous other posts here with Suzanne). All three of us then spending countless hours at Universal Records. The book talk discussions this week at Moe’s and City Lights Books far exceeded expectation: Thoughtful memories and Q&A about The Diggers, Chris Stein, gender politics, Stonewall, art, Blatz, experimental theater, Punk Rock, following own’s passion, creating community, racial identity, breaking stuff, loving friends, it was all so moving and important. Jimmy brought the master signature copy of his We’re Desperate (Hey, two books with X lyrics as the titles) with his 1978 photo of Tommy now signed. There was so much goodness and good stories from everyone this evening. This is just one shot I took that made me smile. I will post more. Paul Curran (Crimpshrine, MaximumRocknRoll), Rob Coons (Photographer), me (Decline Magazine, Art) gathered for Anna Brown’s book talk and slides last week at Green Apple. I told my GBH stage dive story, and a few others. Plus, as part of the Q&A session Rob had these great comments: “… obvious in my work that Murray is my number one influence” …and “Not looking in the view finder … allows you to see everything around you .” … “I wasn’t like ‘I want to emulate Murray’ but subconsciously I was taking photos like Murray; Tight crops, catching action … based on Murray.” …

Kamala Park (Drummer, Organizer, Planner), Anna Brown (Creator, Teacher, Author), Tina Gordon (Drummer, Artist, Entrepreneur), I loved getting to hang and catch-up with these amazing people who make stuff happen and have strong clear convictions. Inclusive and progressive politics too. We need compassionate community organizers with conviction more than ever. More even than in the 80s I dare say. Smarts, strength. Nice qualities.
