This was the 3rd of 4 films I made in the 90s for #bobgeldof and his company Planet Pictures. He’d been hanging out with its founder, #RonanO’Rahilly, at #thechelseaartsclub where Ronan had filled Bob’s head with incredible stories of how he’d hustled #radiocaroline into life. Ronan’s drive to create this phenomenon came from his passion for music married to his relish for taking on the British Establishment. The result was most successful commercial radio station in history. The BBC was forced to create Radio One as a counter move in 1967

A PIRATE’S TALE Dir @pglydon

On 1991 my BBC Arena film A Pirate’s Tale about #RadioCaroline was broadcast. Now on the 50th Anniversary of Arena, it’s getting a rare screening at The Irish Cultural Centre in Hammersmith. It was the 2nd film I made for #sirbobgeldof and Planet Pictures.

It tells the story of how, in Easter 1964, maverick Irishman Ronan O’Rahilly parked a boat full of DJs in international waters off the British coast and overnight demolished the BBC’s pop music stranglehold.
 
Radio Caroline was soon reaching a music starved audience of nearly 20 million.

It’s also a story of a 60s London emerging from the grey 50s on a wave of music driven energy where history was being rewritten by young hipsters with no road map.
