ONDE ONDE

This is the girls favourite kuih (cake in Malay) and mine too. Not only are they delicious but they are super fun to eat as the sugar explodes in your mouth!!

These are made with glutinous flour flavoured with pandan extract and butterfly blue pea flower. They are then stuffed with Gula Melaka( Malaysian palm sugar). Mine are super special. I got them from my last trip to @tanjongjararesort where I visited the local markets as part of my cookery class. We picked up these crumbly delicious sugar. They have the consistency of fudge! I remembered urging my students to buy loads so if you are watching, make this!

The balls are boiled, they are ready when they float, the sugar is melted inside & contained then rolled in fresh coconut. Let it cool and when you crush them with the roof of your mouth, the sugar explodes!

RULE of eating ONDE ONDE - as demonstrated by my eldest (expert level) you got to down in one! You cannot bite!

Bringing her signature warmth, vibrancy and fearless approach to Southeast Asian cooking, Ping opened our MasterChefs LIVE sessions in unforgettable style.

Drawing from her beautiful book, 'Rice', Ping shared dishes deeply rooted in Malaysian home cooking — full of bold spice, fragrant aromatics and the perfect balance of flavour.

Every recipe carried a story, weaving together her journey from Malaysia to the UK through food, family and tradition.

From the very first moment, the Town Hall was filled with energy, laughter and the incredible aromas of Ping’s cooking. Her generosity, storytelling and passion completely captivated the audience, reminding us exactly why food has the power to bring people together.

We are so grateful to Ping for returning to Shaftesbury Food Festival and sharing her immense talent with our community once again. Thank you, Ping 💚

“I was very honoured to be asked back to Shaftesbury Festival this year. I had a great time last year chatting to people from Shaftesbury and beyond. The festival had such a great vibe with a variety of delicious food stalls, and the cheese rolling is not to be missed!”
