#TodayinHistory: #OnThisDay in 1997, #MetroCard was officially accepted throughout #NYC's subway and bus systems. A year later, artist Juan Carlos Pinto @pintocards arrived in NYC and began finding MetroCards strewn around the city. Both plentiful and colorful, MetroCards became Pinto's medium.
Pinto is one of several artists whose work is featured in "Inspired by MetroCard," now on view at the #NYTransitMuseum's @grandcentralnyc Gallery & Store. This free exhibit showcases collage, painting, sculpture, and fashion created with, on, and about MetroCard.
MetroCard's reign lasted until the end of 2025, when it was permanently replaced by OMNY's contactless fare payment system. Do you miss MetroCard?
