Project Spotlight | Liquid Tiles | Where light becomes architecture
Liquid Tiles by @playmodesstudio and @lightnetgmbh – a modular system of individually controlled, rotating light elements. Each networked, each programmable. Driven by generative algorithms, producing an almost infinite range of patterns, colours and behaviours across any surface it inhabits.
From object to urban landmark. Inherently scalable across public realm, transport, retail and cultural institutions.
At 8th Wonder, we collaborate with studios and collectives globally to bring ambitious, technology-led projects into the built environment. Actively scoping applications across Australia and internationally.

As part of the series „Patterns of Liquid Tiles“, we are now moving on to part two, introducing the second behaviour of our Liquid Tiles installation, developed in collaboration with @playmodesstudio
This pattern offers another perspective on movement, rhythm, sound and light, yet it represents just one of many possibilities that Liquid Tiles can express. The system is designed to be highly adaptable, allowing for a wide range of visual interpretations and atmospheres.
Pattern 2: Spaghetti
1. Take a few boiled strands of spaghetti and throw them across the table.
2. Place a couple of mirrors and reflect the resulting composition.
3. Make the strands shine and cast light to the sides.
You will get the most delicious and radiant dish for your hypnotic dreams!🍝💭
This behaviour is driven by controlled, periodic randomisation of the arc angles. All elements shift simultaneously, yet the algorithm favours local continuity, encouraging the formation of long, meandering zigzag paths, the “spaghettis”. These strands weave across the canvas and, through mirroring, transform apparent randomness into a loose and playful symmetry.
A dreamy soundscape follows the stretching and realignment of these luminous lines, accompanying the slow cooking of this ever-changing geometric dish.
Enjoy and stay tuned as we continue to explore the versatility of Liquid Tiles.

You don’t watch this work.
You feel it.
@playmodesstudio is a Barcelona-based studio working across light and sound as a single system.
Their practice spans both fixed and generative works, where image and sound are produced together through code.
What you see here is a selection of their work.
One of their installations will be presented as part of Brixen @waterlightfestival
29 April – 16 May 2026

This video takes you behind the scenes of Liquid Tiles, the kinetic audiovisual light installation developed by @playmodesstudio in collaboration with Lightnet.
It follows the project from the first conceptual sketches through to its final realization, showing how artistic vision and engineering precision come together in a continuous process of experimentation and refinement. Light, motion, and sound are actively shaped through custom software and precisely engineered hardware, generating ever-changing, organic patterns in real time.
The result is a dynamic, collaborative journey that dissolves the boundaries between digital and physical, mechanical and living, bringing the installation itself to life.

Liquid Tiles from a different perspective.
In between each behaviour we do have a transition and usually they don't show up on the videos, so here this video is here to basically show the transitions of our narrative.
The transitions work with a matte texture that transitions from one behaviour to the next, mixing colors and angles.
Liquid Tiles is a kinetic audiovisual canvas conceived as a modular system of 126 computer-controlled rotating light fixtures arranged in a triangular matrix. Each fixture is a curved 60-degree segment which, through its geometric disposition, forms a continuous connective tessellation known as Truchet tiling, named after the 18th-century mathematician Sébastien Truchet. This structure enables local interactions between elements to propagate across the surface, generating larger, evolving visual patterns.
At its core, Liquid Tiles explores the emergence of organic behavior from mechanical and digital systems. Although driven by robotics and custom software, the installation reveals a sense of vitality arising from simple rule-based processes. Generative algorithms define constraints for movement, geometry, color, and sound, within which the system continuously recomposes itself. The result is a stream of ever-evolving light and sound configurations that behave like a quasi-living organism, blurring distinctions between physical and digital, programmed and organic.
The artwork is the outcome of a close collaboration between @lightnetgmbh , a German lighting manufacturer, and @playmodesstudio , a Catalan audiovisual art studio, for Lightnet’s booth at @lightbuildingfrankfurt . All firmware, software, and generative systems were developed specifically by the artists for this installation, while the hardware components were researched, engineered, and manufactured in-house by Lightnet through a shared design process inspired by the Liquid Line product ensemble. Liquid Tiles stands as a living example of how collaboration between industry and the arts can open new perspectives on industrial innovation, contemporary lighting design, and digital art practice.

Meet the brilliant minds behind Liquid Tiles!
Kamil, engineer at Lightnet and part of the Research and Development team, worked together with his fellow Lightnet engineers to develop the Liquid Tiles hardware. He joined forces with Eloi and Santi from Playmodes, who were responsible for the software and programming, combining expertise in engineering, design, and interactive technology to bring the installation to life. Their collaboration has pushed the boundaries of innovation, creating a dynamic experience that merges cutting-edge hardware with playful interactivity.
Adding the finishing touch, Stefan Hofmann, lighting designer from Lichtwerke, crafted the booth concept, designing a space that showcases Liquid Tiles in the most immersive and engaging way. From concept to execution, the team has worked tirelessly to ensure every detail reflects both creativity and technical excellence.
Don’t miss your chance to experience Liquid Tiles in person! Visit the Lightnet Booth at Light + Building, Hall 3.1, Stand D40 today and tomorrow. See and interact with this innovative installation and discover how technology, art and design come together in a truly unique way.

A new journey is beginning.
Light, code, and space merge into forms that are constantly evolving.
Lightnet × Playmodes
Playmodes is an audiovisual art duo from Barcelona, founded by Eloi Maduell and Santi Vilanova. They work at the intersection of light, sound, space, and technology, understanding light and sound as a single, tightly interconnected language - visual music.
Lightnet designs and produces professional architectural lighting, shaping spaces through precision, technology, and design.
Together, we’ve started a collaboration exploring how light and code can merge into new spatial experiences.
Over the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing fragments, thoughts, and glimpses of what’s evolving behind the scenes.

The Instagram Story Viewer is an easy tool that lets you secretly watch and save Instagram stories, videos, photos, or IGTV. With this service, you can download content and enjoy it offline whenever you like. If you find something interesting on Instagram that you’d like to check out later or want to view stories while staying anonymous, our Viewer is perfect for you. Anonstories offers an excellent solution for keeping your identity hidden. Instagram first launched the Stories feature in August 2023, which was quickly adopted by other platforms due to its engaging, time-sensitive format. Stories let users share quick updates, whether photos, videos, or selfies, enhanced with text, emojis, or filters, and are visible for only 24 hours. This limited time frame creates high engagement compared to regular posts. In today’s world, Stories are one of the most popular ways to connect and communicate on social media. However, when you view a Story, the creator can see your name in their viewer list, which may be a privacy concern. What if you wish to browse Stories without being noticed? Here’s where Anonstories becomes useful. It allows you to watch public Instagram content without revealing your identity. Simply enter the username of the profile you’re curious about, and the tool will display their latest Stories. Features of Anonstories Viewer: - Anonymous Browsing: Watch Stories without showing up on the viewer list. - No Account Needed: View public content without signing up for an Instagram account. - Content Download: Save any Stories content directly to your device for offline use. - View Highlights: Access Instagram Highlights, even beyond the 24-hour window. - Repost Monitoring: Track the reposts or engagement levels on Stories for personal profiles. Limitations: - This tool works only with public accounts; private accounts remain inaccessible. Benefits: - Privacy-Friendly: Watch any Instagram content without being noticed. - Simple and Easy: No app installation or registration required. - Exclusive Tools: Download and manage content in ways Instagram doesn’t offer.
