In a vast cathedral devoted to a strange, otherworldly deity, a young girl offers gifts that begin as harmless token of devotion but escalate into brutal sacrifices of her own body. This haunting allegory asks what happens when blind faith and the comforts we never question demand more of us than we have to give.

This is probably the only scene where I more heavy handedly rough animated the way I wanted the shadows to look before @arantxart went in and chiseled it to perfection. Usually I'd tell her the lighting source, she'd show me a sketch of a frame, I'd approve/make minor adjustments, and then wait for the first animation pass.

For this particular scene I realized that light accuracy came second to shape clarity. Regardless of the light source I wanted the shadows to help push forward the curves of the ribbons forming the new angel's legs. So while the ribbons themselves might have -realistically- cast shadows onto each other, I decided to ignore that completely.

I also needed both her feet to stay in the light after the ribbons formed them, because I knew I was going to have light shining from the circuits in the floor. It would look cleaner this way.

The main purpose of the shadows on the wings is to suggest shape curvature. The other purpose is to help separate the body from the wings as two different planes and help with the visual hierarchy. Light hugging the side of her thigh is intentional and helps sculpt the figure.

This has been a mantra I kept repeating to myself, to Ari and to Gabe the whole time: accuracy comes second to purpose. Don't be afraid to BEND reality a little in order to better communicate an idea. "Function before form" is something that has been drilled in me while studying graphic design, and it's something I apply in a range of ways.
