Through nearly sixty images, it reveals subtle variations of light, seasons, atmosphere, and everyday gestures. The intimate experience of a place transforms, and a sense of the passage of time gradually emerges.

Avec Kirsten et Yasse, Eric Tabuchi revient sur l’histoire de ses parents, en mêlant archives familiales et récit intime. Kirsten, artiste danoise, et Yasse, artiste japonais, se rencontrent à Paris en 1951. Leur amour, marqué par trois décennies de création et de vie commune, dissimule un secret révélé après la mort de Kirsten : le passé de kamikaze de son père, sauvé pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale par une panne de carburant de son avion.
Entre enquête personnelle et exploration artistique, Eric Tabuchi transforme cette découverte en méditation sur la mémoire et sur les limites du médium photographique.

Fusing family archives and personal narrative, Eric Tabuchi’s Kirsten & Yasse reflects on the story of his parents.
Danish artist Kirsten and Japanese artist Yasse met in Paris in 1951. Their love, which spanned three decades of creation and life with one another, concealed a secret that was only revealed after Kirsten’s death: Yasse had been a kamikaze pilot during the war, but his plane ran out of fuel and crashed into the sea, ultimately saving his life.
Through a combination of personal investigation and artistic exploration, Eric Tabuchi turns this discovery into a meditation on the perpetuation of memory and the limits of the photographic medium.

Les vestiges de la mémoire
Kirsten était danoise, Yasse japonais. Artistes tous les
deux,ils quittent leurs pays respectifs en 1951 avant de
se rencontrer dans l’effervescence du Paris d’après-
guerre. Trois décennies durant, leurs existences vont se
confondre avant de se séparer définitivement. De leur
union, quatre enfants sont nés. Eric Tabuchi est
l’un d’eux.
Quand, en 1999, Kirsten décède, le photographe
découvre dans les affaires de sa mère deux magazines
- l’un allemand, l’autre danois - qui lui révèlent un lourd
secret. Selon les articles, Yasse faisait parti des derniers
kamikazes qui, à la fin de la Seconde Guerre mondiale,
attaquèrent des navires américains. Son avion, à court
de carburant, s’étant abîmé en mer, il devait à cette
défaillance technique d’avoir eu la vie sauve. Cette
révélation, Eric Tabuchi a immédiatement la certitude
qu’un jour il en ferait quelque chose. Durant 25 ans, le
projet occupera son esprit pour finalement se concrétiser.
Réalisé à partir des archives familiales, Kirsten & Yasse
(c’est ainsi que Kirsten signait toutes ses lettres), nous
plonge dans le récit émouvant et tragique de la vie
du couple autant qu’il propose une réflexion sur la
perpétuation de la mémoire. Avec cet ouvrage intimiste
et distancié, l’auteur affirme une nouvelle fois sa volonté
d’explorer à travers son histoire personnelle les limites du
médium photographique.

Kirsten était danoise, Yasse japonais. Artistes tous les deux, ils quittent leurs pays respectifs en 1951 avant de se rencontrer dans l’effervescence du Paris d’après-guerre.

Leur amour, traversé par trois décennies de création et de vie commune, dissimule un secret révélé après la mort de Kirsten : Yasse faisait partie des derniers kamikazes qui, à la fin de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, attaquèrent des navires américains. Son avion, à court de carburant, s’étant abîmé en mer, il devait à cette défaillance technique d’avoir eu la vie sauve.

Entre enquête personnelle et exploration artistique, Eric Tabuchi transforme cette découverte en une méditation sur la perpétuation de la mémoire et les limites du médium photographique.
