The most magical musical experience awaits 🎶🎷

We’re “queuing” up one of our favorite pieces today! Composed by Masashi Hamauzu, “Blinded by Light” is the primary battle theme in Final Fantasy XIII and it’s theme also functions as a leitmotif for Lightning throughout the game!

While we always love performing the arrangement of this track written for our normal Good Beats Octet (flute, violin 1/2, viola, cello, bass, piano, percussion) by the incredible Jake Bay, this is our first time performing the extended arrangement that also features the amazing saxophonists of @projectfusionsq

Soprano, alto, tenor, and baritone saxophones move quickly between parts, creating a full, fast-paced texture. Melodies from earlier return at a quicker pace, building momentum all the way to the end — like everything clicking into place.

The adventure begins with the Title Theme ⚔️✨

Originally composed by Koji Kondo for The Legend of Zelda, this iconic melody first appeared in 1986 and has since become one of the most recognizable themes in all of gaming. With its bold, triumphant opening and sense of wide-open exploration, it perfectly sets the tone for Link’s journey — inviting players into a world of courage, mystery, and adventure.

Interestingly, Koji Kondo initially considered using Boléro by Maurice Ravel as the game’s theme, but when it turned out to still be under copyright at the time, he composed an original piece instead — giving us the legendary theme we know today.

From its unforgettable melody to its lasting legacy, the Title Theme remains a defining sound of the Zelda series — one that continues to inspire generations of players and musicians alike.

This arrangement by Rachel Choe Lee (@rachel_jeeyoung), performed by Good Beats Ensemble and Project Fusion (@projectfusionsq), brings a fresh, full-bodied sound to the classic. Featuring flute, violin, saxophone, cello, double bass, piano, and drums, the piece blends orchestral depth with modern energy — reimagining a timeless theme for a new stage.

Deep in the rhythm of “African Mines” 🌍✨

Originally composed by Hiroshige Tonomura for DuckTales, this 1989 track is all about momentum — driven by punchy rhythms and bold, looping melodies that capture the thrill of chasing treasure deep underground.

A fun detail: many fans love how African Mines feels almost percussive in its writing — the melody and rhythm are so tightly interlocked that it creates a groove you can’t help but lock into, especially impressive given the NES’s limited sound design.

This arrangement by Dannel Espinoza (@dannelophone) and Joshua Mallard (@josh_mallard) takes that groove even further, expanding it into a rich, high-energy sound. Performed with Project Fusion at the Atlas Performing Arts Center, it features flute, violin, saxophone, cello, double bass, piano, and drums — layering rhythm, texture, and drive into every moment.

Wandering into the “Lost Woods” 🌿✨

Originally composed by Koji Kondo for The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, this beloved theme first appeared in 1998 and quickly became one of the most iconic melodies in the Zelda series. Its lively, looping rhythm and folk-inspired character perfectly reflect the playful yet mysterious nature of the forest.

Written to complement the game’s ocarina mechanic, the melody is intentionally repetitive and memorable — echoing the feeling of wandering in circles while still drawing players deeper into the world.

Reimagined in this arrangement by Rachel Choe Lee (@rachel_jeeyoung) and performed with Project Fusion (@projectfusionsq) at the Atlas Performing Arts Center, the piece features flute, saxophone, violin, cello, double bass, piano, and drums — layering warm, organic textures with a driving rhythmic energy.
